They also have great depth behind the starters. Don Barclay and JC tretter could probably both be starters on a lot of teams. I would bet they draft another OL at some point in the draft.

Health is always the biggest question though.

yep, either way it's good to see rodgers finally get some good protection. you could see it most visibly in the seahawks game. even though he was extremely hobbled, seattle still barely managed to get pressure on him. that bodes well for a healthy rodgers/lacy

Lamarr Houston to OLB....Very interesting. That's a couple big boys in Houston and McPhee at OLB. Interesting dynamic.

One thing I've read about Fangios D in San Fran is that their ILBs dropped into coverage more than any other team, so those 2 big guys probably won't be dropping into coverage.

So Houston is going to be an OLB in the new 3-4. For some reason I had the impression that he would be more of a DE in a 3-4 since he's not really a pass rushing specialist. Now I am confused as to who actually fits as a 3-4 DE. Can somebody fill me in on what type of player is ideal for that position?

With so much stupid going around in the NFL with teams making decisions on QB's I thought there was a good chance Pace would find a sucker for Cutler. There is so much out of town stupid going around on other cast offs from last years team like Trestman and Marshall for one, why couldnt there be one team to be out of town stupid on Cutler? Oh well, I know its because of the money but time will tell how clever Pace can be in personnel moves.

He did get a lot of pressure in Oakland, so he can get after the QB. Think he'll be used more so to set the edge. Think he like McPhee will lineup all over the place.

I know they've been talked about as NTs, but I think Ratliff and Ego can both play DE. With the Bears looking at big boys like Knighton and Williams I think they're looking for a little bit more size than those 2 inside. If Sutton improves he could be a fit as well at DE.

Pace continues to insist the #Bears never explored trading Jay Cutler.

Ian Rapoport ‏@RapSheet 16m16 minutes ago

On Jay Cutler: I spoke with as many QB-needy teams as I could to see if #Bears GM Ryan Pace tried to trade Cutler. None said he did.

Mort said the same thing on Carmen and Silvy (or whatever show is on AM1000 around 11) this morning. Didn't even try to trade him.

Yeah, I definitely thought Houston was ticketed for 5-tech. I think he will end up there. They said that is where they have him as of today. Maybe they see Jay Ratliff playing DE (assuming they find other options at NT)? Will Sutton? Ego (probably a NT)?

This is going to be interesting to follow.

I dont know if I buy that but even if that's the case I thought there would be teams that would have approached Pace about Cutler. Even if it was just to sniff around and see what the cost maybe and hash something out from there.

Apparently Gase really likes Cutler and who knows about Pace. He holds his cards really close so its been difficult to gauge what his opinions are.

But Dan Bernstein's sources...........

Does Bernstein ever get called out for his garbage or does it just go away?

Gase does indeed. Worked together in Denver, have stayed close throughout the years from what I've read. Between the Gase hire, and them hiring a guy Jay publicly lobbied for a few years back to be the QB coach, I think the writing was already on the walls.....And I'm one of the few guys that is ok with that.

He always finds a way to make it sound like his sources were still right but X happened so it changed.

He ignores it. His schtick will get him ousted at some point, but right now he thrives on making s*** up.

Way I see it; Keeping Jay means we can at least be in contention for possible playoff spot before season starts. Given where we pick, any other direction we would have headed would have pretty much been a 2-3 win team, imo. I wouldn't be surprised if Jay plays better this upcoming year and we still move in another direction, but Jay's contract becomes more cap manageable going forward and if he can repair some of that reputation you could actually be talking about a decent asset.

I have more faith in this staff than any staff the Bears have had in a long time. I also like the methodical approach they've taken to FA.

I like their methodical approach to FA as well. he at least understands that you don't build championships through FA with guns blazing. You add parts here and there through FA but ultimately it can only been done through the draft. I still hope he is able to aquire some more draft picks somehow though but there just isnt much he can offer that can bring a pick in return.

Jay's cap number ranges from 16.5 to 17 through 2018. That puts him as the 10th biggest cap number for quarterbacks for the next four years. The cap is going to go up and QB salaries will as well. If you can rehabilitate Jay and get him playing within the confines of the system, minimizing turnovers, I think that's the quickest way this team gets back to competing for a super bowl. LOTS and LOTS of ifs there, the track record indicates that it's unlikely, but if they can get him to play slightly above average . . . he's still has value moving forward.

I would hope Pace and Fox give him a clean slate and let him try to be a better player/leader. There is no benefit to having pre-determined that they will cut him at year's end. If it doesn't work out, cut him. If he makes strides, I don't see the benefit of cutting him for the sake of change. My best guess is that Jay will prove all of his critics right, because he's Jay and hasn't appeared to get better on or off the field and that will lead to his exit. But if he's going to be around this season, they may as well give him a chance to succeed.

I highly doubt the Bears didn't make phone calls about Cutler. Just because other teams said they didn't doesn't make it true.

Teams lie about everything.

And if they didn't, that doesn't bode well for the future.

I still don't get trading Marshall if they had no intention of trading Jay.

Somewhat interesting to note with the news of Houston to OLB, these are the 40 times of OLBs who played for Vic in SF and Baltimore...

Aldon Smith- 4.74

Ahmad Brooks- 4.69

Parys Haralson- 4.80

Terrell Suggs- 4.84

Elvis Dumervill- 4.75

Paul Kruger- 5.00

Courtney Upshaw- 4.76

Jarrett Johnson- 5.07

Both McPhee, Houston, and Young are in the low 4.8s.

Allen ran a 4.72, but doubt he's still close to that.

Marshall was traded for all the off the field stuff. ERRBODY likes Jay he's a swell guy... “Absolutely,” Slauson said. “I have every confidence in him—his ability, his intelligence. The guy can be the best in the league. We just have to do a better job supporting him.

“We didn’t do a very good job of that last year. But, Jay can be every bit of a Tom Brady, a Peyton Manning, an Aaron Rodgers. He can be them, if not more.”

Just teammates sticking out for each other. If he really thinks that, he needs to stop drinking that coolaid.

Conte to the Bucs. The Conte/Wright safety tandem is back in action!

It's funny how much coaches emphasize players that know their system, as opposed to players who are good at football
