I've never seen this reported anywhere before. Very interesting. Could have completely changed baseball history if this had happened.

Cheap White Sox ownership.

There were other potential suitors as well, such as New York Yankees owner Frank Farrell who offered Dunn $25,000 for Ruth and three other players just prior to Ruth’s sale in July 1914. Dunn turned it down, hoping to get at least $30,000.

You're right, it could have. But the White Sox were the most popular team in 1919, having won the WS in 1917 and featuring a ton of stars on the team. I read a book that suggested had they not thrown the series (and gotten caught) that their popularity as the number one team in Chicago and one of the most popular in the league could have endured through several decades. Who knows. But at the time of the scandal they were the #1 team in the city, hands down.

This is an interesting what-if. But a more interesting one, imo, was during Veeck's first stint as Sox owner, when he had a scout looking at some Negro league talent, a few years before Robinson broke the barrier, but the idea of having black players was nixed by the commissioner (was it still Landis?, can't recall).

The scout recommended signing Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Ernie Banks. We'd have been the Yankees.
