They bought a lot of shiney new things this offseason and it didn't help with attendance. Consistant winning over a period of time is how you turn this thing around. That requires a rich farm system to use to replenish and to use for trade chits. Going for short term contracts to win now is not a strategic play. This is chess versus checkers here. The Sox see it as an opportunity to try to keep people showing up, versus the possiblity of losing them for another year, two years, five years, etc. All you have to do is see all of the posts about how many post seasons in how many years to know that this is very directly why the Sox are looking to buy when they have the chance.
