John McDonough

Sorry if this has/is being discussed in another thread. With the Sox on the brink of becoming the equivalent of what the Clippers were in LA for two decades, it's time to pay John McDonough anything it takes to get him here. The Sox (and the Bulls for that matter) lack vision and direction (our GM admitted that the way the Sox are going about business is more difficult than typical!) and McDonough has proven that he can make teams relevant. The Hawks were an afterthought in Chicago before he and Rocky took over. The Sox are on very thin ice in this town. The Cubs, to their credit, are built for sustained success and it's going to be a challenge to generate interest in the South Side. Winning of course helps and I'm not saying McDonough fixes that but the Sox need revenue and being relevant would create more dollars.

John McDonough doesn't turn the Blackhawks around without Toews, Kane, Keith, Seabrook, etc. Those guys were there when he took over. He's good at his job but lets not get crazy here. The Hawks have 3 of the 12 best players in the NHL.

I hate to be sooo negative but the Sox were relevant in 05. Somehow they didn't learn from the 85 Bears and almost immediately were on a downward path to irrelevance. The Bears at least made it back to the Super Bowl I think once since then.

The Sox actually have drawn pretty well since 05 all things considered. I don't think the team has been losing money and the Cell has never been a ghost town. I would expect next season with the Cubs very good and the Sox one of the 2-3 worst teams in the AL, the crowds might finally dip substantially and 15,000 a night will be common all summer. There's just no reason to go anymore for fans. With the team unable to make any noise in the Central and offensively anemic, there's right now no hope. I can't imagine selling season tickets for this team, pointing to all those exciting games against KC, Cleveland, Minnesota and Detroit. BORING losses.

I don't know what they should do. I just have a sneaky feeling if they fire Robin they are going to make a gawdawful hire like Buddy Bell. There's no hope right now.

Brooks Boyer was a boy wonder in 2005.

I would love to see McDonough try to perform his "magic" with this fanbase and this ownership. He wouldn't last two years.

not with the ownership .... esp if they would need to give up some of their day to day power and decisions.

If you look at the numbers starting from 05, the attendance has gone down by a lot every year. As of now, the Sox are in 26th place. With no hope of actually competing for the next 2 years, the numbers will continue to go down. I am not willing to fork over hard earned money to see crappy baseball when I can sit at home and see the same crappy product for free. That being said, The offensive numbers for the Sox continue to stink. Our very good pitchers get absolutely no run support. Just ask Quintana. His wins would be much more if he had any type of run support. If I were managing, I would not seek out big bombers (laRoche) but players that can hit for average. This is not rocket science. It's easy to do.

You don't win many games when the bottom half of your order is hitting where they are. This does not even mention the Sox lack of situational hitting or RISP. Since LaRoche K's almost 33% of the time, why is he ever in the lineup. Shuck K's only 10% and has a much higher average. This is a no brainer with the DH role.

In ever other White Sox relevancy thread,I read the Sox can't be relevant unless they start making the playoffs every year, and am constantly told t is what fans are owed. They shouldn't be expected to support simply good teams, they need a consistent winner. How would McDonough accomplish that? He is a marketing guy.

I tend to agree. The Sox are beyond marketing. They have plenty of fans, but the product is horses***.

I agree with most of this thread, but let's not get carried away. The Clippers had like one winning season from 1980 to 2005. Their franchise player was Eric Piatkowski. I mean, we risk being long term bad, but never Clippers long term bad.

Are the people who are talking about McD needing to be hired really saying that they would go to more games if they marketed better, and not if the team was better?

good point,

however i don't think it for us the fans on soxtalk, but the fans of everyday fandom.

i guess, and i may be a minority here, but continuing to put a better product, will show that the team is trying to improve the product on the field.... the fans will see this. i am sure of that. now will that convince the everyday fans. i really do think so.

The White Sox product IS the product on the field. A guy like Boyer or McD is only selling the product he has. What exactly is McD doing that is so good, besides having a 3 time championship team to market?

ok i am at work and may not respond quickly....

but what you bring up is a viscous catch - 22.

so the question to ask is how will the team or anyone expects to the team to improve???

I think bottom line, what is keeping the fans away and what will continue to keep the fans away is the staid, unmoving, inability to change the approach and higher level personnel year after year, despite the same crappy results.. The Sox are 67 games and counting under .500 since late 2012, a one game improvement so far from 2014, and yet.. chance are high that the same bunch of mopes in the front office, Cooper, Ventura, etc. will all be back.. it just shows a lack of progressive thinking and stubbornness to stick to an approach that isn't working… and they wonder why people don't show up

And this thread has nothing to do with any of those perceptions.
