Time to Trade Chris Sale?

Watching the game on baseball package today, the Boston announcers were talking openly of the prospect of our Sox trading one of the dynamic duo.

I think Q is a better guy to move at the deadline if we sell. I would wait until after the season with Sale unless someone is willing to overpay. If he turns in a Cy Young season you can trade him at the peak of his value in the offseason.

In the offseason the competition is almost every teamwilling to trade pitching as well as the free agents. Fo example, it seems like the market for Sale or Q will be limited because it is going to take a lot to get either one. If Boston decides they need another staring pitcher for the pennant chase this year, they might trade off assets that would take them out of the market for another trade in the off-season.

The question is whether or not you're demanding players who have already hit the big leagues in return for them. If you're demanding a player who is establishing himself on a big league roster as a return for Sale, you will not get that at the trade deadline because teams in contention are not going to give up the guys who put them in contention. That's the spot where they might get desperate and part with any minor leaguer you want for one of them, but if you're talking about big league talent in return that's the one thing you don't get at the trade deadline. The only recent example I can remember of a team in competition giving up a player in a trade at the deadline was the Cespedes/Lester deal.

 

If you're willing to trade Quintana for a package of "entirely minor leaguers", then the deadline might be ok. If you're insisting on a 2nd-3rd year player as the keystone in return for Sale, you will not get that at the deadline.

And the point about no way the Sox send Betts/JBJ/Bogaerts packing mid-season is exactly on point.

 

Bogaerts currently looking like one of the five best players in the AL, and at SS, that would be an absolute shocker.

Agree but that is why I said that only a few teams may have the pieces to interest the Sox for Sale. We have really only heard Dodgers, Red Sox and possibly the Yankees. But Boston and LA may not be in the market if they acquire pitching at the deadline next month. Normally offseason gives you more options but for Sale that could go either way. Q would probably be better in offseason. Rumors today indicate Red Sox are chasing other players.
