I am a Telecommunications major, and it's pretty heavy on the journalism part. We are driving down to Florida for spring training, and doing a bunch of multimedia stuff on stories. Whether it be text articles, audio slideshows, video projects, or anything of that sort. We are currently in the process of getting story ideas, and particularly of players. Anyway, I was just wondering if you guys knew of any intriguing minor leaguers with good stories to tell. We should be getting press passes to interview players, but we are much more likely to target prospects and minor leaguers who have more time on their hands and are probably more open than the seasoned veterans and superstars. We have obviously listed names of players who have ties to Indiana, either by living here, playing for the Indianapolis Indians, going to a college in Indiana, or anything of that sort. But apart from those obvious, we are looking for other stories. Maybe a career minor leaguer who is considering giving up on his dream. Or maybe a kid who graduated with a good degree and is using it as a fall-back plan in case baseball doesn't work out. Something to that effect maybe. Any ideas? The Diamondbacks hold their ST in Arizona, like the White Sox do. So any players I interview would have to be w/ teams that train in Florida. I'll take ideas from players who have no connections to Indiana at all, but I'm just saying thats where our class is starting from, and then branching outward. A good journalist always asks around. You never know who might know someone. We already have a list of about 10-12 players on our board, but minor leaguers aren't the most reported on players, so maybe someone knows of a little known story that we can use. SouthsideDon48 Posted January 16, 2012 Share Posted January 16, 2012 (edited) If you're looking for some interesting stories, try and find a spanish translator and try and get interviews with Julio Teheran, Randall Delgado, and Aroydys Vizcaino of the Atlanta Braves system. They're not from Indiana, they're from Colombia (Teheran), Panama (Delgado), and the Dominican Republic (Vizcaino). I think it would be very interesting to get an interview about their lives in those countries and how they got discovered, and their adjustments to playing ball in the states, etc. Maybe even ask them what they thought about the Wilder skimming scandal. So far they don't seem to sure on the idea. Mets and Pirates seem to be the only teams fully on board w/ this. Phillies won't call me back/reply to my emails/or answer their phone. Not sure which I will choose, or maybe I will do stories on both, and show the contrasts between the careers of Terry Doyle and Vitek, although they are different ages and play different positions, so separate stories would probably be better.
