The Sale Trade

My question is this- will a more VALUABLE player ever be traded?

Basically the best pitcher in the game who is lefty, in his prime, locked up on a ridiculously cheap deal.

Has the bar forever been set? Will a team ever have to offer more than the #1 position prospect and the arguably best pitching prospect?

I feel like this deal may never be eclipsed based on value, right or wrong.

Was the bar set low or high?

You guys all love the Sale trade. A small percentage of us Sox fans think Sale and Q were a pretty potent 1-2 to head a pitching rotation and only a lousy manager in Robin prevented some pretty good success. We had some pretty good ballplayers on paper during the Sale/Q era. Hopefully the Sale trade will fuel a nice rebuild; we shall see.

Well, it's not often pitchers like Sale get traded. IIRC, the last was Seattle trading Randy Johnson to Houston which I think was '98 so it definitely doesn't happen often. Don't remember the prospect rankings on the players Seattle got in return but I'm pretty confident none were close to the likes of Moncada and Kopech.

Will we ever see a prospect return similar to Moncada and Kopech for a pitcher like Sale? It's possible but I think that will be a long time from now.

What's even more fun to think about is if Basabe develops into anything close to his ceiling. Time and patience are the keys with him.

Yea on Basabe. I guess my point is that a guy with Chris's value may never get traded again. So is it fair to say this is the most a team can get for any one player? If so it's cool to think the Sox traded the most valuable player ever traded.

I don't think it ever gets topped in terms of talent + contract, unprecedented. Also part of the reason its so hard to judge the trade because you could argue he was worth even more than what we got technically...but no team would pay that much.

Johan Santana is the most recent one I can think of but he didn't have anywhere close to the contract Sale did.

No we didn't. We offered a very raw, lottery ticket who happened to explode in to a top 5 mlb prospect.

That's like saying the Sox one time traded a 60 WAR, 600+ HR monster for an old and washed up George Bell.

How different would the world be if George Bell wasn’t obtained?

Uh...I don't think there's very many people, if any, that didn't think this.

And it wasn't Ventura's fault that a lot of the guys "who looked good on paper" sucked.

Yes, I do agree that it's fair to say Moncada+Kopech+Basabe+Diaz is the most a team could get for one player. As someone else has said in another thread, Moncada has the potential to equal or exceed Sale's vale in WAR all by himself. If Kopech hits his ceiling, the trade becomes lopsided in favor of the Sox. Lol, if Basabe hits his ceiling, Fuhgettaboutit!

I'm going to pass along advice Tony was nice enough to pass on to me last night. Don't go down the rabbit hole! :D

He was more than a lottery ticket, and he "just happened to explode" such that within 2 months of the trade he was a top 100 prospect and rising fast.

The Sox didn't know what they had in Tatis; and they probably didn't really know what they were getting in Shields (how many Sox scouts were in Seattle?).

Shouldn't have given a prospect of any sort for Shields- pure salary dump was more than enough.

The trend seems to be towards the devaluing of prospects in trades. It is taking more and more guys to get big deals done now. I don't know if the trend continues or not, but it will be interesting to see. I want to say this was the first time ever that the #1 overall guy was dealt, and then you added another top 10 guy in Kopech.

Sale and Q will be under the spotlight this week. Both had an impact on their teams winning their division. But now they have to produce in October when the pressure intensifies. We will see how they hold up. It will be really interesting if they meet a few weeks down the road.

A Red Sox-Cubs World Series is just about the worst thing I can imagine in the baseball world.

Not sure how many people watched last night but Kahnle and Robertson combined for 5/2/3 scoreless innings. I'm happy those guys are having success. Kahnle is just another feather in the Sox' organizational cap developing raw throwers.

It will be harder for me to see Q pitch than Sale for some reason. I always wanted Q to pitch a Sox playoff game. Sale, while I respect his skill (stand in awe at times really) never really endeared himself to me the way Q did. The jersey thing last year took away a pretty big piece of my fandom for Sale. Dude is a little nutty and not always a great team mate. Q on the other hand is the ideal professional, clubhouse wise.

I was trying to be nice. I thought those of us who didn't want a rebuild were in the vast minority. You seem to freak out over my posts. Take a deep breath and realize I am not the enemy. I am a Sox fan, too. If I am wrong, give me your take, but you don't need to freak out and be bothered by me. I don't disagree with you folks that much. I am wait and see on the rebuild rather than excited about it; I like Avi and Abreu and Davidson a bit more than most and get defensive when they get criticized, yes; I tend to be more disturbed about our bullpen and 3 lousy starters (Shields, Pelphrey and Holland) than most. (Yes, I understand why they are here during the "we don't care about winning" part of the rebuild (waiting for younger players part of rebuild). So that's about it in terms of gross disagreements with the majority here. Relax and enjoy the upcoming winter. Oh wait. It will be horrid like all winters.

Considering his signing bonus, I don't think anyone knew about Tatis. It was a lottery ticket that exploded. Whether it translates into a long major league career is yet to be seen.
