European Refugee Crisis

Tens of thousands of people are fleeing Syria, Iraq and other areas for Europe, trying to escape the war and devastation. The EU is urging member states to accept 160k migrants. The US has accepted some, but there's increasing pressure for us to accept more. Hungary is being particularly terrible in their treatment of refugees crossing through trying to get the Germany, essentially imprisoning them in fenced-in camps and now threatening to arrest anyone who crosses the border (Hungary has a neofascist government in power right now).

Fabulous idea. We need more people on welfare. We can afford it as a country. All for it.....but only if every last one of the "refugees" is settled in Manhattan, San Francisco, Beverly Hills, Georgetown, Greenich, Michigan Avenue, Palm Beach,Fla., etc....King s***head will do whatever he wants..Executive order....signing statement....blah blah blah....A disgrace to the office and the country....

No. Want none. The newspapers only show the few women and children there, and ignore the fact that a majority are men of military age, and they are as a group ungrateful bastards. They get food and riot because it isn't halal, or refuse water because it came from a Red Cross box. f*** them all, do't want. Go HUngary. Maybe we should accept the same amount as Saudi Arabia takes, which is ZERO. All they have done is offered to build mosques for them in Germany.

I think we should take as many as we can handle. The more people leave Syria and Iraq, the less power those leaders have. Getting those people into places where they are forced to deal with western culture would also be a benefit I'd think.

But they don't deal with western culture, they just stay happily in their own culture. There is no melting pot anymore. The number we can take safely is zero.

While Syrian refugees currently make up the largest single source of refugees, the refugees are coming from not just the Middle East but also Sub-Saharan Africa and other Eastern European countries. Even those fleeing from Syrian and Iraq are not all Arabs and include many Kurds and other ethnic minorities facing widespread persecution.

The UNHCR has statistics available on where refugees are coming from and where they are/where they try to go. One thing to keep in mind is that many Gulf Arab states, including Saudi Arabia, are not signatories to the UN refugee agreements and aren't included in these statistics even if they have some number of refugees in the country on "work visas."

The melting pot thing is all a myth anyways. Why do you think places like NYC and Chicago have all of the ethnic neighborhoods? Places like Little Italy, Chinatown, Germantown, etc existed for a reason.

The older generations didn't come here and assimilate, learn English and all of that crap. They took the worst jobs that no one else wanted, and the largely stuck to their own neighborhoods, speaking the old language and culture. It was their children who assimilated. They were the ones who learned English and American culture. They did the talking for their parents.

It is still like this today.

They have to deal with western culture to the extent that they have to live in a place where women are allowed to drive and people are allowed to eat pork and drink beer.

Hungary is being the onlly smart country in this scenario, how come other Muslim Countries will not accept refugees?!

Many are; there are something like 250 refugees for every 1000 citizens in Jordan right now. The refugees are mostly trying to pass through Hungary on their way to Germany, anyway.

I can't speak for all of you, but it's hard to look at family history and our stories of "ancestor grabbing last boat out of x-war-torn-country" and then look at these and be like "naw f*** it let it be hungary's problem"

It's also funny to me just thinking about how hysteric our country would be if it actually had to deal with all of the human displacement that comes from our foreign policy adventurism.

Though it is the same history repeating itself. 19th century America was frought with all of the same anti-immigration, and anti-specific nationalities during their respective periods of heavy immigration. Two off of the top of my head would be the Chinese and the Irish.

We didn't exactly cover ourselves in glory with Jewish refugees during the 1930's and 40's either.

While the USA can largely be described as a country of immigrants, a lot of places in Europe are not historically diverse. And what little diversity there has been in many central and northern European countries has not typically included a great deal of Muslims or non-Europeans. It has been a real challenge there, particularly in terms of how many of these peaceful, supposedly highly progressive areas are now looking at themselves and seeing that being a "melting pot" is hard and it takes a lot of support from the citizen to the government for it to work.

It's worth mentioning that not all Muslim countries feel obligated to look out for one another. Saudi Arabia is pretty friendly with the USA, after all. Gulf Arabs tend to feel superior to inland Arabs and to some extent the inverse is true as well. They are not all the same.

Yeah, this is a great point.

For what it's worth, the US is taking less refugees than 30 years ago. I don't understand why, when our population growth is slowing, it is believed we cannot accept immigrants.

Yeah, that list is not exclusive by any means. For a country of immigrants, we have always been pretty anti-immigrant.

Until about the mid-19th century, the population that wasn't brought over in slavery was overwhelmingly British in origin. Once those uncivilized potato-eating Catholic Irish and Huns started migrating, though, we get the birth of nativist parties like the Know-Nothings.
