Assume for this poll that there is no other party and that one of these 17 people will be the next President. Where would your vote go? Interested to see how Soxtalk results compare with national polling.

Crap, where did the poll go?

Part of the art of voting for me is, since no candidate will align with everything I believe, you choose based on what they actually have a reasonable shot at effecting. This is why I voted for Rauner over Quinn. Rauner is pretty far right on social issues but frankly, he can't win on those issues in Illinois (thankfully), so it came down mostly to fiscal policy. And I felt the state needed someone to grind into the legislature on that.

Using the same thought process, I think I'd go either Kasich (ideally) or Rubio (among those who have a real shot at winning).

Also worth noting - you can find hints with every candidate how they would shift when going to the general. I think we'll see Rubio be more moderate on many key issues, including immigration, when it comes down to it.

Kasich–he's basically George Bush, I know what to expect.

Jeb Bush–he's basically a slightly more moderate George Bush, I know what to expect.

Donald Trump–he's probably the most liberal in the field on issues he'd have a snowball's chance of effecting. In the worst case, he helps lead my party to an upswing in the mid-term.

Rubio–I have a hunch that he might be a reasonable person deep down inside.

Lindsey Graham–he'd by my top choice if it weren't for the POTUS's ability to more or less singlehandedly decide to wage war. Outside of his Muslim paranoia, he's the most reasonable and moderate of the rest of the field and is someone who I know knows how to make legislation happen in Congress.

Just for fun, the NSS rankings of preference among current GOP candidates...

Kasich

Rubio

Christie

Paul

Fiorina

Bush

*large gap*

Pataki

Jindal

Walker

Graham

Cruz

Carson

Santorum

Trump

Huckabee

I'm more or less in agreement with you here.

I'd love to see Trump win just so the whole system gets blown up. He won't be able to effectuate any actual change (read: harm). He'll alienate the GOP as much as the left within the first week of office.

Kasich seems like the boring pick that has an outside chance of actually doing something worthwhile. Rubio is probably the most electable. I'd be happy if those two were the ticket, in either role.

Seems to be only a matter of time before the crazies burn out and Rubio takes nomination. He is a pretty good candidate who seems much more disciplined than any of the others, which bodes well for general. Thankfully a few years passed since it was showed how spineless he was.

Does Kasich have any particular traits/policies that people like?

Or is he just appealing because he seems like a reasonably nice/reasonably intelligent/reasonably sane/reasonably moderate person in a field full of people who aren't?

Two words: budget surplus. Did it at the federal level, did it at the state level. He's also yet to say anything crazy, he's not on the anti-gay marriage/repeal Obamacare/overturn-Roe v. Wade platform (lost battles, time to move onto other things), and he just comes off as a sensible guy that can get stuff done. He doesn't talk in emotional platitudes. He seems to focus on his accomplishments, not other people's failings.

He has a track record of fiscal success as Ohio's governor, got re-elected with well over 60% of the vote in a pretty moderate state, and yes, he has a history of saying things that make sense.

In general I think being a governor of a big state is as good of preparation for the Presidency as you can get.

As a social liberal, fiscal conservative, it is really hard to find an ideal candidate. But I like Kasich, he embodies the fiscal conservatism I desire and he seems pretty well grounded on social issues. For example, in regard to SCOTUS's same-sex marriage ruling, he basically, the court has spoken, let's move on. He also was able to work with the unions in Ohio because he understood and accepted the popular support for them. He is the one candidate, on either side that I feel can best bridge the divide between the two parties that is completely stunting any legislative progress.

For the record, I live in Ohio and very much dislike Kasich. I've seen his corrupt little jobs-building programs and his pouring of funds into backer-owned voucher schools that consistently rank among the worst in the state. I also saw him refuse to debate his opponent in the last election and act like a big baby when he had to be interviewed in that candidate's presence because he didn't think the other candidate should exist.

But, you know, there are worse guys on the ticket and while I don't like how corrupt and immature he can be, his firm policy positions tend to shade moderate. If someone would promise that Lindsey Graham couldn't control the military, I'd probably vote for him in a Republican primary

I too like Kasich. I think he would make the best President out of the Republicans. Or maybe Jeb. It's close.

Jeb doesn't strike me as an moron, unlike W.

The downside is that he has the same gang of idiots that advised his brother on foreign affairs/national security so no thank you.
