Ahmed: Child inventor or part of hoax?

So a Muslim youngster was arrested at his Texas high school after bringing a clock he made to school. It was ticking of course and didn't look much like a clock. But the public reacted quickly, the kid was deemed a genius and he's been on all the talk shows and got free gifts from Microsoft and is invited to the White House, etc.

One problem. His family are activist types and the dad has been part of hoaxes before. I believe they are suing the school and the police. Since an article by an expert saying the clock was a ripoff of a clock made in the 80s and the kid merely disassembled such clock and put some wires together, the media has kind of dropped the story.

It looked like one of those stories in which the high school and police should be ashamed of themselves for arresting a boy wonder kid cause of his race. Now it looks like it's something else. Where are the articles now? It doesn't fit the agenda anymore so the story is not worth covering??

Are you following this story? Any take on it? I'd say odds of it being a hoax by the kid are 50/50 at this point.

It's proven the dad is an activist and it sure looks like he used his kid to try to make some money. If so please throw the book at dad.

p.s. The more I now read about this the more Obama and Hillary should be ashamed of themselves. They rushed to judgment and praised this kid before getting any facts. This looks like it was not a cute 'kid builds clock and gets roughed up for it' story! Please media, don't let this die as you are! It doesn't fit your agenda anymore but somebody show some guts.

It still looks like a story where pretty much every authority figure involved should be ashamed of themselves/removed from their position.

How could it be a "hoax?" The kid claimed it was a clock from the start. There's been no deception on his part. Even if the father was attempting to "make a point," that would still require the teacher, school administration and the police to all act stupidly and in concert in order for it to actually result in anything.

Also, lol a link to Pam Geller.

eta: as for "where's the media coverage now?!?!" the story happened, it's pretty much over. what do you think they should be covering?

I think it's a truly brilliant strategy on his family's part. I mean, think about it. Nothing bad ever happens to people of minority groups when they're in the hands of the police and I defy anyone to provide any recent examples to the contrary.

Oh, cool an article by Pamela Geller.

Sure this will be good.

Don't shoot the messenger on this one. This is a good case study in media/politics/jumping to conclusions way too early.

You are wrong. Read about the case. There appears to have been great deception on his part. Listen to Mark Cuban what he said after talking to the kid. The family is an activist family. This was a trap and the kid and family won. The kid is trying to raise 100,000 bucks on a webpage and luckily the public hasn't been fooled. He's only gotten 12,000 bucks.

Kudos to Bill Maher for not falling for this and examining the case.

As far as hoaxes go, "son take this clock to school, say it's a clock, watch them arrest you, get released and then shame them"...I mean, the fact that that works kind of shows there is something wrong anyways isn't there?

Either as a response to school shootings or a symptom of the general incarceration issue, schools have been using jails way too often. I'm skeptical that using jails as rehabilitation for minors has been a helpful strategy.

I want the media looking into the possibility the kid's family had him disassemble a clock (not make his own clock), put it in a box with wires sticking out, pretend it's his own invention, act like a little jerk when questioned about it, now trying to raise money for himself over his 'mistreatment,' have the kid admit to a Dallas reporter he 'didn't want it to look like a bomb.' Why would a kid excited about his making of a clock even think about it being a bomb if he was merely excited about building a clock? I applaud Bill Maher and his panel for questioning this! Kudos to Mark Cuban as well! Please buy the White sox Mr. Cuban!

Next from Greg, how the Virginia news shooting was a set-up hoax to bring on gun control so the new world order can take over.

Please don't be lazy. Please read this and consider both sides. The kid obviously was set up by daddy to cause this issue. Why are smart people like Bill Maher and Mark Cuban backing my side of this issue?

Look the teacher the kid supposedly was trying to impress said nice job but dont carry the clock around the school because people might think it was a bomb. He did anyway (cause ol daddy the fricking ACTIVIST told him too?). Another teacher hears it ticking and sends him to principal.

Please read this at least and don't be lazy about this story. There are two sides. Anybody who contributes money toward this kid is stupid right now and Obama and Hilly should be ASHAMED for jumping to conclusions and tweeting support for this kid without knowing the facts!!!

If you are being led by the media on this story and refuse to consider the kid's family putting him up to mischief at least read this item. It exposes the hoax pretty well. At least give my side of this argument a chance!!

Yeah, that's the other side of this. If authority figures in Texas are so predictably terrible that it would make a complex scheme wherein your son gets arrested for having a clock, then that says a lot.

Holy crikey, "greg". Conspiracy? Hoax? Do you have any evidence whatsoever of it being a hoax? Other than some people's apparent desire to make it so?

Wow.

Have you read about this? Did you listen to Mark Cuban's account of talking to the kid? Have you listened to the experts say the kid's invention took about a minute to reconfigure some wires off an already made clock? Don't turn this into a Greg thing please. There are 2 sides to most every story and the media and Obama and Hilly wouldn't wait this one out. This isn't Greg freaking out. My take on this is shared by people like Bill Maher for gosh sakes and Cuban and security experts.

Notably, nobody called the bomb squad or evacuated the school. You know, things you'd typically actually do if you thought it was a legit bomb.

There's been plenty of people supporting what greg is saying, even powerful people on the left. Don't get the need to attack him.

I don't think he should have been cuffed though. He disassembled a clock. While I don't get the celebration of his "genius", I don't think it should have ended with cuffs either.

There is no "both sides" unless the "other" side has something resembling evidence of a hoax. This link you just shared (which I cannot believe I read) contains 9 points, all of which are pure supposition and reach based on already-known facts.

I'm sorry greg, but YOU are the reason people vote for Donald Trump and think vaccines are evil and think 9/11 was an inside job. Because YOU fall for stories with absolutely no hard evidence to support their theories, but boy they sure sound interesting.

Stop it. Please. You want people to not be "lazy"? Look at that story you linked. Read it critically. Look at the language and the style. And look for anything in there non-circumstantial at all.

The lack of explosives and an ignition source would be a dead giveaway.

Unless it's a big red gas can, I'd have no idea what a bomb looks like. The steroypical movie suitcase with wires coming out is what I would imagine, and I'm sure plenty of people do to. I think Brian's correct in saying better safe then sorry, though the police should have realized it.

no, the alarm went off. It's a digital clock.

The facts are that this kid brought a repurposed clock to school and authorities in Texas lost their s***, arrested him and suspended him for multiple days long after it was clear to everyone that it wasn't a bomb. He never pretended or claimed it was a bomb or threatened anyone.

If you are being led by the media on this story and refuse to consider the kid's family putting him up to mischief at least read this item. It exposes the hoax pretty well.

Even if his dad put him up to this, every adult involved acted like a bunch of idiots. It's far-fetched anyway, but even if it were true, it'd be a legitimate act of pointing out how awful the school admin and local police are.

At least give my side of this argument a chance!!

No, because it's ridiculous.

The kid should get a F in his engineering class for ripping off an already made clock and trying to call it his own. but fear of islamophobia will get him a full ride to MIT.

The kid didn't claim to have invented the idea of a digital clock or manufactured the circuit boards from raw materials.

I do like the attempt to make the hypothetical "fear of islamophobia" the bad guy here instead of the actual case of real islamophobia.

You could take a clock apart and rewire it back in middle school?
