After Deadline Trade Question

Was just curious. (I am sure the answer is obvious, but just something that I was never clear on, or fully understood). Every year I hear the pressure of teams making trades by July 31st deadline. This year we were all hoping that Dunn would be gone by then. If there is a deadline...then how can a player be traded after that time period without putting him on waivers? What's the point of the "pressure" of a deadline for trading....if someone can still be traded afterwards? Thanks for any and all clarifications to those that reply.

If you want a longer explanation of how trades work after 7/31:

"Trade Deadline" is misleading and titled improperly. It should be called something like, "Trade Deadline in which Waivers are not Required". Or, August 1st should be called, "Beginning of Waiver Required Trading Period". Trouble is, announcers and writers might not understand it, and then we are all in trouble.

The past few years, I have been hearing more and more people calling it the "non-waiver trade deadline".

One more point: anybody that has cleared waivers can still be traded. It just doesn't happen often because anybody traded after 8/31 is not eligible for the postseason.

Correct. Didn't a trade happen last year during the playoffs? But not with playoff teams.
