‘They Are Slaughtering Us Like Animals’

"I HAVE WORKED IN 60 COUNTRIES, covered wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and spent much of 2014 living inside West Africa's Ebola zone, a place gripped by fear and death. What I experienced in the Philippines felt like a new level of ruthlessness: police officers' summarily shooting anyone suspected of dealing or even using drugs, vigilantes' taking seriously Mr. Duterte's call to 'slaughter them all.'"

No more excerpts because it's heavily a photojournalism piece, but the crackdown going on in the Philippines right now is just brutal.

Have spent about six months over the last decade in the Phils, mostly Manila and Cebu...just sent this photo essay to one of my friends who said she was originally in favor of Duterte (they're from same hometown, Davao.). She's VERY Catholic, as well. Interested to hear her reaction/s.

Can't believe there isn't more press coverage and outrage that crooked Donnie has invited this Hitler wannabe to visit the White House.

How come I was told to cut it out when I was calling her Hilly and Crooked Hilly and we're calling him 'crooked Donnie?' He's the President of the United States, folks. I'd show him some respect or maybe move to Canada. I mean I wouldn't vote for him as is my right to abstain with 2 horrible candidates, but he is my president now. I wasn't crazy about Obama except for his Sox and Chicago fandom but I never showed him disrespect. Let's face it there are inconsistencies on this board which leans Democratic over Republican big time.

I don't particularly like the politics of a Bush 41, Dole, Bush 43, McCain, or Romney, but they were basically respectable people. Donald Trump is a straight up piece of s***.

I woulda got banned for calling Hilary the same. Trump is president because the DNC ran off Bernie. Bernie would have won.

Trump is horrible, no doubt, but he is your president unless you decide to revisit your citizenship. Face facts. Donald Trump is President of the United States and our leader.

Greg, nobody would have banned you for that.

We've just learned to accept that respect for the office of the presidency has gone out the window since Nixon.

Remember all the "you lie/d!" stuff with the congressman confronting Obama? Calling Hillary or Trump "crooked" is nothing. I've sometimes called him PT Trump. Even Newt Gingrich, his close advisor (supposedly) says he's 1/3rd PT Barnum but hopefully more Harry Hopkins (FDR's close advisor).

Fair enough Caulfield. You da man as always.

However I sensed enough consternation at my calling Hillary names that I stopped when somebody important told me to cut it out.

You were doing it over and over and over and over and over again and asking a dozen questions that weren't really questions and ignoring the substantive answers people gave you, in the Democratic thread specifically, and it got to the point where people found it annoying. That wasn't specifically because of what you said.

It actually leans Republican.

The reason it seems to lean Democrat is because you go into the Democrat thread, spout your broken record lines without listening to the other posts and then say s*** like "show him respect or move to Canada."

You know who he's respecting? The guy carrying out these killings.

Oh. I thought it was for calling her names.

Also interesting that this is why Greg posted in this thread. No concern about the actual topic at hand or the fact that Drumpf is welcoming this abhorrent dictator to the White House.

I have a lot of concern for Trump. I think he's a ruthless person, I'd lean toward calling him a very bad person, but that's just my opinion. I am not a fan of 1 percenters who step on the little guy daily to make millions. As far as this issue, I'm not really full of knowledge about it but I'd assume you are all right and it's disgusting, etc.

You should quote me correctly. I said if he's not your president then you can move to Canada. I said I always showed Obama respect on here even though I thought he was a lousy president/great Sox fan. I never said move to Canada. I said if he's not your president then you can move to Canada.

You guys who wanted Hillary to win were like all the pundits. You underestimated how many Americans (yes we are all Americans) would never never never vote for her. How many Americans despised her. I read somewhere she is the most disliked politician ever.

As bad as Trump is, I do stand by my line that he should be showed respect. Caulfield made a good point though that we don't really respect our Presidents anymore so I should consider that in more depth.

Perhaps if he's your president you should move to Russia.

Thanks for at least admitting that you're an epic troll. You could read the very first post of this thread to learn about the issue but you obviously just came in here to do your tired schtick.

Lol at this respect the president schtick. Not after eight years of blatant disrespect of Obama from colonial LARPers and Republicans in Congress.

Not for the man that ran a campaign built on xenophobia, Islamophobia, racism, sexism, etc.

But to bring it full circle, Greg, you gonna respect Duterte? Afterall, he is the president of the Philippines.

The irony is that dictators (even in a democracy like the Phils) usually start out with huge popularity and almost all of the people behind them...so, despite viewing the drug killings/vigilante-ism from a Western perspective, that doesn't mean that there isn't a large majority supporting the strong man approach to the problem.

That said, Leni Robredo (VP, she's from another party, as the Pres/VP aren't elected together, she narrowly beat Marcos' son) has resigned from the position and is trying to lead an opposition party against Duterte, but she's already being attacked for being a high society/social climber/1%er and not really connected to the needs of everyday people, either.

People want action...not talk. Something concrete (see Trump/Carrier/union negotiations) or at least the perception that someone is fighting for THEM.

Cmon. I am an American. I wouldn't vote for Trump, but now that he's in, I hope my wallet expands. I mean I don't think it will; he probably will be a disaster, but I can hope. I'm not rooting for his failure, that's for sure. It's kind of rude of you to suggest I'd move to Russia. I am an American through and through. I love our military and love this country. Yes I despise Hillary. I'm human and she rubs me the wrong way.

Sorry I don't follow all issues. The election is over. Forgive me for taking a break from politics. Yes I despise Hillary. Yes I think Trump is evil one percenter. Yes I love Bernie. So shoot me.

Hannity and O'Reily aren't talking about it.

Greg has never heard of it.

Haven't watched much political stuff at all since the election was over. Not following all the headlines regarding Trump/Hillary/Bernie.

I showed Obama respect. I even voted for him and I'm Republican. Rather than look up Duterte to respond I'll continue to tell you I haven't studied this issue. If he's a brutal dictator no I don't like him. If Trump invited him here ... I told you I don't like Trump. If he invites a dictator who kills people to the USA, perhaps we should try to impeach Trump. No killer should be invited here.

Look I responded to the guy who said "crooked Donnie" cause I thought I almost got banned for saying Crooked Hilly. But I guess I was almost banned for just being generally a dick not that one post.

I wouldn't mind if Trump got impeached, even if the electoral college refuses to put him in. I'd take McCain as a compromise pick. I don't know how that works, who gets voted in if the electoral college refuses to put in Trump. I'd assume it's not Hillary by law.

Pence would become president, then Paul Ryan would be next in the line of succession.

You can't just choose someone else.

And yet you're ok with Russia having committed criminal acts in support of the election of Donald Trump and encourage others to leave the country if they have an issue with lawbreaking in support of a candidate.
