The #WhiteSox and #Marlins recently discussed Christian Yelich, but never got much traction. Chicago has a deep enough farm system to match up with Miami, but talks failed to advance beyond the "routine dialogue'' stage. Rival executives think the #Marlins will hang onto Yelich.

Think this deserves it's own thread. Love the aggressiveness from Hahn. Never hurts to try.

It may in fact hurt to try.

Without knowing prices it's always hard. What the Marlins have gotten back so far has been uninspired, but if you look at the Ozuna deal, those were good and high-level prospects. Increase them.

For Yellich, would fully expect a Gio/Lopez, Dunning/Hansen, Burger/Collins return at a minimum. I would not trade him for any less.

It would take Kopech as a principal i'm sure, if not Moncada. Yelich is under control at an acceptable price for awhile and is elite.

I would say we might be able to decrease the price if we take on a bad contract. Maybe the reason we haven't done that with Kemp or Ellsbury yet is because that is our plan with the Marlins.

Who might they try to dump with a bad contract?

Yeah.

I’m honestly just feels weird to trade Eaton only to trade for a controlled OFer with talent (meaning prospects) a year later

In a year or two, Kopech and Jiminez could easily each rise up to be worth as much as Yelich on their own. Patience is the biggest strength we have now.

I see Yelich costing considerably more than the Sox (or the fans) would be willing to part with.

If he were on any team other than the Marlins, I would agree. But I don't expect Miami to get top dollar for Yelich. But the price is still probably more than I'd be willing to pay. The Sox need to build the remainder of the next contender out of FA, and trading excess prospects in a year or two. Its still too early to make trades like this IMO.

Eaton is 29, Yelich is 25. Those 4 years make a huge difference.

Yelich is 26, Eaton was 28 when we traded him so not as huge as a difference. I'm fine with them being intrigued and if he comes at a reasonable price then I'm all about it. He's not going to come at a reasonable price though and to be honest, I don't want any part of him with what he is going to cost.

Sox may be playing a bit of the Braves last year. Didn't seem like they were ready but were still putting offers together for each big trade candidate.

And like the Yankees as well - they were in on alot of trade candidates last couple years even though they were in a "rebuild" period. The Sox have a few untouchable prospects IMO - Moncada, Jiminez and Kopech. Everyone else should be on the table if it betters your long-term future. The Yankees similarly are keeping Torres off limits in just about any trade. They seemed to have the same mindset with Frazier last year but the Stanton deal changes that.

Also - I wonder if a Marlins rebuild might focus on acquiring depth rather than stars. The Sox more or less had to sell the fan base on a rebuild and targeted top-end prospects in most of their deals - probably except for Eaton but I don't think we could have expected Robles in return. The Marlins won't have this issue. Their fans already know this is a rebuild. A Marlins rebuild might look more like the Padres - trade some veterans for depth and scour the international FA market to build a really deep system. Not saying the Marlins won't want Eloy or Kopech, but they might be open to three or four guys rather than just one. The Ozuna trade kind of gives off that vibe too.

Solid point.

Also an interesting idea.

Piggybacking on the salary dump idea- Prado and Chen are the 2 dumpable contracts they have (Prado 2/28M, Chen 3/52M). The Sox have the ability to easily absorb one of them.

Yelich is a 4.5 WAR CFer under contract at 5/58M. The guy has crazy surplus value. The Sox take on Prado or Chen and he is still worth an elite prospect and a top 100 prospect.

Marlins trade:

Yelich

Chen

Whitesox trade:

Leury Garcia

Lopez/Giolito

one 20-30 ranked sox prospects

one 30-40 ranked sox prospect

----

Marlins trade:

Yelich

Prado

Whitesox trade:

Leury Garcia

Lopez/Giolito

two 20-30 ranked sox prospects

one 30-40 ranked sox prospect

Only thing i question is if I'm overvaluing lopez/giolito in these trades. They have essentially the same amount of control as Yelich, and if they are good, won't be too much cheaper when you consider arbitration years. The marlins need to field some talent, and Leury can help with their loss of outfield and infield players. They get high end prospects as well as some depth. Chen's contract is really bad. He has had Tommy Johns and is having more elbow issues.

When you say 20-30 and 30-40, are you referring to in the Sox system, or in the MLB?

Hard to see this being a fit today. Another example of the "why?" not making sense. He would certainly fit in the long-term plans being controlled for cheap and being young. But at the cost? Spend two years on a bad team? You can potentially buy him next year for less.

I'd really like to avoid seeing the Sox make any significant deals right now unless it costs them next to nothing. Taking on salary would be the best, and likely, the only way to accomplish this. So if the Marlins want a Dane Dunning like package provided we eat Prado or something - fine by me. Anything on the higher end, we should pass.

I know we're all antsy and excited but I hope we stay the course. Develop what we have, sell our assets for prospects, take our lumps as we bring kids up, draft top 5 in 18' and hopefully 19'. Make a run at some FA in 18' or 19'. Don't sell anything of value off that farm. If we're smart, take a flyer on a couple low-end upside guys and hope to sell them at the deadline.

Right now, we have a great farm. Figure out a way to add another 5-10 guys (Figured at least 1 from each of Abreu/Avi, 18' and 19' top 5 picks, etc) to it that would be top 10 elsewhere and you're truly onto something that you can sustain long-term. If you cut loose guys now - you're asking for this to blow up in your face. Guys will fail. It happens. It's inevitable. Depth will win out. Stay the course.

No thanks. Now is not the time to be paying kings ransom prices for anyone not named Mike Trout.

Give these guys 2018 to develop and hopefully in 12/2018 we're in a spot to spend a bunch of money and pull off a trade or 2 that puts us in contention for 2019.
