PBM aka Play by Mail games

Since most of you are an older crowd, you would probably know what I'm talking about...

Have you ever played in any PBM (play by mail) games?

I just recently got back into playing a play by mail wrestling game called the IWA (Imaginary Wrestling Association) after being retired for the last 10 years or so. I originally played from 1997 to 2005, and I was feeling nostalgic and ended up going back, lol. Two of my buds I met through the game also went back, and the funny thing is, when I first joined the game in 1997 when I was 12, I was one of the youngest people in the game, and now at 29 years Old, i'm still one of the youngest players in the game because most of the other players are in their 30's, 40's, 50's and older.

Have any of you ever played in the IWA? If so, what leagues and stables were you in? (Something tells me that lostfan would love this game with how he loves cosplaying. :))

For those who doesn't know, the IWA is a play by mail game where you create a wrestler or a couple wrestlers, join a league, and pick a 15-hold strategy where each hold has a hold value that changes from cycle to cycle, and the wrestler with the best value "wins" the match. When you send in your wrestler's strat, you also send in matches, you get a paper bulletin in the mail 3 weeks later with the first page being league, tv, regional champs, tag and tv tag champs, sixman and tv sixman champs, plus the 2nd page is rankings, then the rest are match results and trash talk that you write and send in. In the current age of the internet, this game is a dying breed, a rare game, and a lot of young kids nowadays wouldn't have the patience for this game in today's instant-results world. But this game is still very fun for the old-school types who enjoy creating characters and submitting role-playing trash talk. Basically you can be a pro wrestler in an imaginary wrestling ring, lol.

So that's the pbm game I play in, which is at www.playiwa.com

What games have you guys played? I'd be interested in checking them out. :)

That game sounds really cool. :)

yeah, I can't remember the name either, but everyone had a 'country', and your country had points for food, production, minerals and oil. you had to allocate various things to have enough food for your peeps, but army, navy or air units, bases, or invest in tech to build better units. Moves such as invading other countries or shoring up city defenses (for simplicity you had only several major cities in each country that could be bases, etc.) had to be written down and sent in to whoever was moderating the game. Invasions were done with some program where they entered the units, how many and the strength and it gave them out the outcome. I can remember one time I was Mexico and had controlled all of central and south America as well as the desolation of North America (for a buffer of protection), but for some reason could not get Cuba. We had a friend back in the day that tried to make a battle program for that game on his own, and it worked, but it took way too much of his time with 40 or more players.

This sounds like Diplomacy on steroids. I can't find anything about it online though.

I love/hate Diplomacy. I still have it. I have a friend that will never play it with me again as no matter what the situation, I always seem to turn on him, or have anticipated when he will turn on me. There was just a big story on Diplomacy somewhere. Didn't know they have leagues, scoring and world tournaments.

This American Life covered it like 6 months ago, which started the whole idea for us. So far we've had 2 game days (6-7 hours of drinking and stabbing each other in the back) and a couple of online games using backstabbr. They take months to finish, but it's kind of fun.

The first game a friend turned on me and I got knocked out pretty quick. I was pissed off the rest of the day. Another game I won after aligning myself with someone the entire game and then backstabbing him at the end to win. I got all anxious about doing it because I felt like a dick. And sure enough after I did he was pissed at me for a while. Still good fun though!
