BA Top 100 Prospects

I don’t know. Part of me is annoyed thinking we have to start drafting better (3 straight drafts in top 11 have netted us exactly one top 100 prospect), but some of this list you have guys that I’ve heard extremely negative things about. Ultimately Sox just need to be more right about burger and Collins than the prospect guys.

But I don’t know, it eats at you seeing the slight things they could have done differently to come out ahead.

The Sox with only five top 100 prospects:

4. Jimenez

11. Kopech

57. Hansen

58. Robert

82. Dunning

I’m actually shocked by how low Robert is ranked and somewhat surprised about Hansen.

Only 5? I thought they'd have 4 when I saw BA's top 10 list. Really happy to see Dunning there. I'm high on Collins and Burger so this is a positive.

I don't mind where Robert or Hansen are ranked. To me they are both guys that had such big questions about them that they ranked where they are right now while some of the questions still remain.

For Hansen its whether he can keep the command he has found and not suddenly lose it like he did his Junior year. If he is able to go out in the first half and do what he did last year I can see him jumping up to the top 30 by midyear.

For Robert, they just haven't seen him play in a game against competition here yet. To me his ranking is like how they rank guys who are just drafted where they basically just have to guess where they would be based on tools alone and no actual track record against real competition.

Robert is a top 10 type talent, so if he goes out and dominates like we think he can, I don't think we'll have to worry about him being ranked low anymore. He could have an Acuna type of rise through the ranks.

I think Robert's ranking is pretty strictly based on his little exposure to higher level competition. I imagine he will be a top 25 prospect at this time next year. As for Hansen, he was previously unranked, so that jump for him is pretty impressive. I think we should all be pretty happy that the Sox might've landed a #1A or #2 with a 2nd round pick. That said, seeing this kinda gives me similar feelings to what bmags expressed. Hansen is the only player you've drafted in the last 3-4 years that cracked the top 100? I'm not sure that speaks highly to the talent evaluation in our system and that is a little scary. I think Collins, Burger, etc. will be useful MLB pieces, but can't help but be a little irked that the industry isnt a little higher on people the Sox have drafted and developed.

How many players on these lists are ranked that were drafted after Collins and Burger? I haven't really looked. Just curious.

Well two quick ones are Whitley and Faedo.

FWIW Faedo is one of their only 2017 draft holdovers that I think deserves the high ranking based on his performance.

They always have players like Adell ranked super high and it ends up being premature.

I guess I thought Collins might slip in near the end. I was pretty confident Dunning would make it based on their write-up.

I’ll say this much, this list is making me think the talent accumulation phase of the rebuild is far from over. I’m sure guys like Burger, Collins, Rutherford, Cease, & maybe even Sheets all fall somewhere in the 101 to 150 range, but it makes me sick to my stomach seeing how many top prospects good teams like the Yankees & Astros still have or just recently gave up. We definitely need to acquire more depth between now and the trade deadline.

That Eaton trade just keeps getting better and better haha. This list is right about where I thought people would be.. However, I still think Kopech is low.. Yes I said low.. I still think he should be closer to top 5. #CyYoungin3Years

Robert was ranked 45th in their midseason list, so just kind of surprised he’d fall 13 spots.

And to me that goes back to intl fa again. They have a system that has a lot more 16-17-18 year olds that can grow into top 100 prospects, and do. Our system I really like and am positive on but right now it's a ton of 22-25 year old guys that hopefully crash in all at once, at all levels.

I still don't understand why people think/thought Collins is even close to being a top 100 prospect LET ALONE inside the top 100

ISOs above .200 at every level, wOBA above .367 at every level, wRC+ above 130 at every level, BB% above 17.8% at every level. Dude rakes.

Don’t sell yourself short, Moncada debuted at #6 after a pretty good year at A ball at the age of 20 when he was with the Red Sox.

Upon looking up Adells stats I take back my assessment that they are overshooting, that's a nice debut with good k rate from someone people questioned their performance vs top competition.

Yep. Adell was my top target for Sox

Hindsight is 20/20 but it’s not like we didn’t see this one coming. We gave up 3 productive ML’er (one of which had immense trade value) for a guy who was hyped as a Top 30 guy at that point. Some 200 ABs later he fell completely out of Top 100. Not saying he won’t bounce back inside T100 going forward, but I think it will be hard for him to sniff the top 30-40 status again. Return seemed light then, but even more so now.

Yeah, it is funny to see both Fowler and Mateo still in back end top 100.

I think most of us felt this way when the trade was announced. I personally never understood the Rutherford hype (being a top 40 prospect), but was willing to give the Sox the benefit of the doubt. Obviously the early returns aren’t great on Blake, but 2018 will really tell us what we might have in him. I’m also disappointed that the second piece in the deal was Ian Clarkin. Not a huge fan of his despite the 1st round pedigree.

That’s how teams like Yankees and Astros built their orgs with strong big league team and also a productive farm system. Their prospect evaluators are some of the best in he business. Astros made smart choices about not trading Bergman, Tucker and Whitley, and Yankees sold high on a guy who they lost faith internally on.
