Around The Majors

I thought we needed a replacement for the Rumors thread wher you post those random tidbits from around baseball that don't really nead their own thread. Starting it off ---

Joe Mauer was given Monday off because of some mild soreness and swelling in his left knee.

There go those flashing red lights again. This isn't a major setback -- it would have been more of a surprise had he made it through the spring without any issues at all -- but it's still disappointing given how well his rehab had been going. ''We're going to back him off for a day or two and see how it goes from there,'' manager Ron Gardenhire said. ''All we can do is wait and see.'' Mar. 7 - 6:25 pm et

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Pitcher Adam Miller, regarded as the Cleveland Indians' top prospect, will be sidelined until at least June with a strained right elbow.

An MRI exam showed a strained ligament in his throwing arm, and he won't be allowed to throw for six weeks. Another MRI then will be taken to determine if he can be cleared for a four-to-six week throwing program, said John Farrell, the team's director of player development.

Farrell said Sunday surgery does not appear likely. The organization will monitor Miller's progress and limit his pitch count when he returns.

Miller, drafted in the first round in 2003, went a combined 10-6 at two levels of Class A ball in 2004. The 20-year-old right-hander's fastball was timed at 100 mph last summer with Kinston in the Carolina League championship series.

"We can't pinpoint what caused the injury or when it happened," Farrell said. "Adam passed a full orthopedic examination Feb. 23 and threw for the first time two days later. He threw 25 pitches in the bullpen, all fastballs, at about 70 to 75 percent. That is normal for this time of year

Don't you guys think he needs to switch positions? This early in his career and already that much injury prone? I am sure if they still had AJ they would be thinkin about switching his position.

Well, he can always become a dh in the american league or a first baseman. I think it is worth the rick for a team like the twins to try and get additional offense out of their dh and leave mauer at catcher for the time being. I am also sure he would not be too happy if they ask/told him they are gonna change his position.

Mauer will move to 3rd. Mark my words on that. At the same time its kind of crappy because Mauer has all the ability to be one of the best catchers of all time. It will never happen though.

My guess is he will be playing 3rd base sometime this year.

he should be fine but if there is another serious problem from what i hear he would move to 3B and Cuddyer to 2nd and Rivas goodbye  :rolly

From what I've heard, Rivas isn't so popular in Minnesota nowadays. They kind of soured on him since hes been injured and hasn't had that much success for a while. Also, Loshe is the Twins version of our Garland, especially to the fans. Although Jon's put up better career numbers than Loshe.

Many notes here;

The Nationals could replace Endy Chavez in center field, or at least use him in a platoon. Alex Escobar — called "too good to be true" in the early exhibitions by GM Jim Bowden — could alternate with either Chavez or another left-handed hitter, Ryan Church. Terrmel Sledge, the probable fourth outfielder, could move into a starting role if Nick Johnson is injured and Brad Wilkerson moves to first. Church, drawing trade interest from the Royals, has a minor-league option remaining, making it likely he will stay.

"His eyesight is off the charts, in the Dunn-Bonds category," Bowden says. "His hands are incredible. There's no reason why he won't put up numbers."

Jerry Hairston got traded, and his younger brother Scott, moving from second base to the outfield, could be next. Scott isn't going to crack the Diamondbacks' current outfield of Luis Gonzalez, Jose Cruz Jr. and Shawn Green. He's getting squeezed from below by the team's top outfield prospects, Carlos Quentin and Conor Jackson. Defensively challenged, Hairston would be perfect for an AL team that would covet his slugging. ...

The A's and Pirates scouted each other last week, preparing for a trade that could send OF Eric Byrnes to Pittsburgh, possibly for RHP Ian Snell. The A's, however, still would prefer to trade Byrnes to the Mets in a three-way deal that would land them Astros 2B Chris Burke, with the Astros acquiring the Mets' Mike Cameron to play center field. The A's already have Mark Ellis, Keith Ginter and Marco Scutaro at second, but GM Billy Beane has been fixated on Burke ever since the infielder was at the University of Tennessee. ...

The Padres also are among the teams looking for a starting pitcher — they'd love an upgrade over LHP Darrell May — but the market is exceedingly thin and could remain that way through the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. The leading potential free agents — Marlins RHP A.J. Burnett, Cardinals RHP Chris Carpenter, Angels LHP Jarrod Washburn and Dodgers RHPs Brad Penny and Jeff Weaver — probably won't be available if their teams are in contention. If the Brewers sign RHP Ben Sheets to an extension, A's GM Billy Beane could again hold the biggest chip — LHP Barry Zito, who isn't a free agent until after 2006. ...

Our guys haven't been exactly flawless on the mound either.

True but are we paying them seven million dollars either? Also, millwood is gonna have a rough transition from the national league to the american league in my opinon. Last year was not exactly so great for him. His era will hover around five all year i am thinking.

The money does not matter now. It's what they do between the lines.

Lots of guys could have put up comparable numbers to what millwood will most likely put up that is all i am saying. Why not get more than one average pitcher and at least get two for say half the price because elarton, durbin, davis and even lee are not very scary to me at all.

All I'm saying is don't put a lot of weight to an early ST start .... especially in Arizona.  Our "big signing" of El Duque has been horrid down there.

I wouldn't consider El Duque as our "big" signing. The Sox had a lot of signings, but none of the moves were talked about "putting the Sox over" like the Millwood signing will supposedly do with the Indians. Even with the Duke's s***ty outing, it still lasted more than 1 inning, and he doesn't have an ERA of 45.00, and a WHIP of 7.00.
