Should he strike a deal, the 31-year-old Nakamura will become the fourth Japanese player to join a major league team through the bidding system, after Ichiro Suzuki (Seattle Mariners), Kazuhisa Ishii (Los Angeles Dodgers) and Akinori Otsuka (San Diego Padres). The system is one in which major league teams present sealed bids to win negotiating rights with Japanese players. If he receives an offer, Nakamura will begin talks with a club through his agent Dan Nomura. After the player's name and status is revealed to all American and National league teams through the Major League Baseball commissioner's office, teams have four days to post their bids and the highest bidder is given 30 days to negotiate a contract. ''Nakamura called around noon today asking that I take action for the posting system so I did it immediately,'' said As***aka after turning in the required documents to the baseball commissioner's office in Tokyo. Last month, Nakamura held open practice sessions in front of major league scouts in California despite being selected in the distribution draft to play for the Orix Buffaloes in 2005. Nakamura, an Olympic team member in Athens and Sydney, had also traveled to the site of baseball's winter meetings in a bid to draw interest from major league teams. He walked away from a free-agent deal with the New York Mets in 2002 and opted to sign a four-year with the Kintetsu Buffaloes, his team of 13 years which merged with the Orix BlueWave and became the Orix Buffaloes this off-season. This past season, Nakamura made 500 million yen and was the highest-paid Japanese baseball player, but was limited to 105 games and 19 homers due to injuries. He hit .274. On Nov. 3 he announced his decision to play overseas, saying that the deciding factor was the merger. He joined Kintetsu as the fourth draft pick in 1992 and won two crowns with 39 homers and 110 RBIs in 2000. A year later, he drove in 132 runs to capture the Pacific League RBI title for the second straight year and helped guide Kintetsu to its first league title in 12 years. Anyways, I doubt the Sox are interested, as with this posting system you have to bid for the right just to negotiation with the player. Getting his avg. over .260 [which should happen pretty easily] would be enough for what he gives the sox, power and glove wise. If Uribe needs a day off, who plays short? Iguchi? i thought his shoulder injury required they move him to second? Maybe he could still spot some games. I guess we'll find out. The second is Josh Fields whom we drafted first and is on the fast track. If he is any good he should be ready in three years when Crede will start making more money. The Third is the bidding process. We will not pay money just to negotiate, then pay more money to sign. Those are the reasons. Qwerty is right. I think the Mets offered him a 2-year, $7 million contract a couple years ago and he was close to accepting it but he turned it down when his Japanese team offered him alot more money.
