The problem is that there's no reason at all to assume we're five years from contention. How can you even plan for more than five years out? If you can't imagine a 24 year old will still be young enough to contribute the next time you have a shot to contend, you're saying that no one in your entire organization will save your team at any point. If you're talking about guys more than five years away, you're talking about guys in high school and college.
That's exactly what's wrong with this organization, they haven't drafted and developed anyone that can save them in the near future. You have bad and/or aging players making too much money relative to their performance and no one in the system to step in. So, if Hahn decides to completely rebuild today and is able to trade Rios, Dunn, Peavy, Crain, Thornton, etc., do you honestly think that with the players he gets in return combined with what the Sox currently have in the system, that they will be competitive in the next couple years? Doesn't seem likely
