Addison Reed trade from DBacks' perspective

Just thought it was worth revisiting.

52% of DBacks fans approve, 48% against, with this season almost completed.

Would probably have about the same split from the Sox side...with most saying it was the RIGHT move at the time, Gillaspie didn't look like a surefire power source/run producer and had many defensive issues his rookie season and the White Sox were going to be rebuilding and not in need of a pitcher who was on the verge of becoming increasingly expensive in arbitration.

Just as many doubts there about keeping him for 2015 as the White Sox have with Dayan Viciedo and Nate Jones.

Okay anybody who has seen any of my posts know I feel the loss of Reed had a horrific effect on this team. He couldn't close so we trotted out a number of closers who basically all failed. Some had a run of a couple good saves, then failed.

Davidson at this point is a prospect who appears to be a non-prospect. He has his work cut out.

I give the trade a D to D- on Hahn's resume.

Why?

This line from the above-mentioned article ...

" As of today, 9/18/14, Reed holds a 4.13 ERA with 31 saves and an 86.1% save conversion rate."

That, folks is a damn fine conversion rate and damn fine number of saves. I'd have preferred him closing for the Sox and finding two decent set up men from the number of lousy pitchers in our organization.

Go ahead and fry me now. p.s. You all may hate me and/or my posts but at least you must admit I am consistent in my opinions.

Yes, they are consistent. They are consistently full of opinions based on emotion and use of archaic stats. This post is an example of using outdated stats. People gave up on trying to explain advanced stats to you.

Addison Reed is 23 out of 32 in SV%, lol: http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/closers

His conversion% is actually 83.8% according to ESPN....Only 9 closers (of the 30 listed) have worse...His ERA right now is 4.40, worst among those 30.....Only 4 closers have a worse WHIP.....Only 4 closers have a worse batting average against (He and Petricka both have a .250 BAA)....Not that it really matters, but he also has 7 losses, which is the most.....His 10 HRs are the same amount given up by the 5 guys who have gotten saves for the Sox combined ( 242 innings vs 57)

His K/BB looks great, but he was giving up homers left and right early in the year. You can't have that from your closer.

On paper it was a win, we traded from what we thought was a position of strength and acquired a top 100 prospect who could still pan out. I dont think its a question to be honest. I think many of our trades lately have a purpose of rebuilding this club and I understand why they were made. Reed would have helped this team immensely this year, however we also didnt know our last two guys were going to get hurt immediately. What we DID learn is I believe we have some pretty good arms in waiting.

I also believe the pen is something that management is going to be working on quite a bit this offseason as well as a bat and one more SP.

Then why were the stats used in the article? The reporter used them with confidence.

Top 100 prospect for a meh closer is always a good trade in theory.

But Zona willingly made the trade. Hmmm... do they know more than Buddy Bell?

D-

Seriously?

You like this trade? This is a results business. We gave up a strong closer candidate (he figured to be mighty comfortable in the role again this year on the South Side) for a guy who does not look like a prime prospect anymore. Maybe he'll be great. Did the Dbacks figure he was a strong candidate to be a bust?

I happen to think a GM, if he is doing his job, at least has a closer in waiting if he trades a decent closer. I know, I know ... Nate Jones.

I don't think you do know because you continue to discount that fact.

I like how you avoided all the stats people put up...None of which are "advanced stats". You noted his ERA, again I'll say he has the highest ERA of any closer. You also noted his conversion rate, which is in the bottom 10.

It hasn't hurt the DBacks any because Davidson hasn't done a thing and they had three "better" players in (their minds) in place, so it's hard to consider it much of a loss for them...it really hasn't helped either team at this point.

I'd call it neutral at best for AZ this season (leaning negative) and bad for the Sox simply because of what eventually happened with the bullpen and the fact that nobody emerged to consistently take the ball in the 9th with a lead...Petricka had his moments, but he's far from a sure things, and shouldn't even be the presumed closer going into 2015.

It's more of a typical KW early 2000's move...trading prospects for somewhat "proven" major league players.

The move was lateral for both teams.

Nate Jones should have taken over, Webb was throwing fireballs.

Reed was good, not great.

Davidson was a highly touted 3B prospect where the Sox were weak.

Jones got hurt, Webb didn't deliver, Reed sucked, and Davidson sucked.

But you do that trade every single time.

Well if somebody can continue to say Davidson would have been great this season had he made the team out of spring training and his mental makeup caused his lousy minor league season, then I can say Addy Reed would have been even better in a White Sox uniform as closer this season after a pretty good year the year before. He'd have been even better than in Arizona cause of the comfort level as continuing Sox closer.

It's like Caulfield saw the future and knew Reed would give up yet another walk off homer last night

Jesus H. Christ, that ball was just insane. Good luck trying to follow it into the stratosphere. :D
