Game thread...

I don't think anyone cares anymore at this point. It's also relevant since Sale/Kluber/Felix are the three relevant names in consideration at this point for the Cy Young.

Sale throwing an easy 96 MPH in the first...great move by Ventura to walk Victor Martinez and not let him beat you, despite how good JD Martinez has been this year.

Maddon would routinely walk Miggy Cabrera with a runner at 1B and two outs to put two runners on, with one pushed into scoring position.

Two "easy as pie" innings now for Sale.

ERA down to 2.17. If he could end the game in the 2.00-2.09 range, that would give him a bit of a stronger case for the Cy, although probably the only way he was going to win was ending up below 2.00 because of the 7-8 missing starts compared to the other contenders.

Scherzer and Lester will get consideration as well.

Hawk and Stone mentioned Cabrera has been intentionally walked 10 times this season. Victor has been intentionally walked 27 coming into today's game. A case against the protection doesn't mean a thing crowd. And that is with JD Martinez putting up numbers probably close to equal to Miggy's. Reputations matter as well.

Felix-Kluber, Kluber-Felix. Every Cy ballot should start with these two.

Martinez 15/28 lifetime against Sale.

That's one strong argument for signing him, lol...

25 walks and now SIX K's in his last 173 plate appearances for Martinez....you don't sign a TOP FIVE AL MVP guy at that age, it would be just about the definition of insane.

For the Royals though, he makes perfect sense if they can also bring in a replacement for Shields.

Sale with way too many pitches to make it past the sixth at this rate.

Abreu seemingly running out of gas the last 6-8 weeks. Not hitting the ball with any type of authority...but still getting singles and doubles.

Does Kluber win the Cy Young over Hernandez and Sale if the Indians were in the playoffs instead of on the outside looking in?

Hernandez is one more terrible/fading out of gas starts from being in a bit of jeopardy vis a vis Kluber for the Cy.

I don't think team strength does or should matter in Cy Young.

I think because of Felix's start, Kluber gets a lot more votes.

What was Sale looking at/tipping his hat to? He looked back towards the OF a few times that last AB.

Scott Merkin ‏@scottmerkin 8m

Guesses so far on Sale's hat tip direction: White Sox bullpen, Avi Garcia in right or imaginary friend ~

Josh Norris ‏@jnorris427 6m

@scottmerkin Maybe he's setting up an example for his word of the day.

Jason Beck ‏@beckjason 6m

@scottmerkin If he was trying to show Victor Martinez the way to Chicago, he was pointing the wrong way.

How does the fact that the guy that leads the league in IBB bats in FRONT of a guy having an awesome season support the idea of protection? Doesn't that simply support the idea that the best hitters get mroe IBBs regardless of who hits behind them?

Miquel Cabrera, MVP each of the last 2 years, generally regarded as the best hitter in baseball, has 17 fewer intention passes than a guy you don't want the White Sox to have any part of. 27 times Victor Martinez didn't get to hit because JD Martinez was protecting him. 10 times, Miquel Cabrera didn't get to hit. Assuming Victor was in the line up each of those 10 times, it is a significant difference. As I stated, Victor has a far better reputation and total resume than JD.

Do you really truly think if Cabrera and Victor were flip flopped, Victor would still have 27 IBB if the next guy up was Miquel Cabrera?

We now know who Sale tipped his hat to earlier in the game. He thought pitches were being stolen/tipped apparently

Scott Merkin ‏@scottmerkin 3m

Martinez stared at Sale all the way down the line. He said something to Sale. Sale answered and he pointed with his glove to CF

....I have no idea what is goin on right now

Would this have led to Sale hitting VMart on purpose? I didn't see the HBP.

It looked intentional, but the game circumstances don't lend itself to that. Unless you just assume Sale doesn't give a f*** if they win this game or not.

Well, if the two had words in VMart's previous AB, then it surely would seem intentional.

It's possible, it was VMarts last AB where Chris looked to the OF a few times then tipped his hat out there after striking him out....It didn't look to me that he was looking at Avi/Eaton, his eyes were a bit more elevated.

Guerra in.

Sale finishes at 2.17 in 174 innings. 208 K's.

Taking away his rain-shortened 3 inning start, He was just a tick under 7 innings per start in his other 25.

Hopefully next year is 33 starts x 7.33, and he wins 25 for a good team.
