@philgrogers: White Sox have to be considered a big factor w/19-yr-old Cuban SS Yoan Moncado, who played w/Jose Abreu. He's a big talent.

If he signs in this period, I would imagine a team that went over its cap already (Yankees and Red Sox, I'm looking at your) would bid big, as they incur no further penalty to do so.

Now this is a guy the Sox should go very very hard after. I would be asking Abreu and Alexei to be salesmen while telling JR he WILL open up the wallet and offer this kid a contract he will not refuse. I know other teams will be all over this kid but the Sox just have to find a way and maybe this is the year they over spend like the Yanks, Cubs etc have in the past.

They did that with Abreu. But doesn't depend on who bids the highest? Either which way, I do hope the Sox get him. Would be an excellent long term solution.

Cubs and Rangers can't sign him for more than 250K and the Red Sox, Yankees and Rays can't sign him more than 300K.

Hahn needs to be all over this kid, and Abreu needs to do some recruiting.

The only problem is that given the success of Abreu/Cespedes/Puig and the new draft rules, teams are far more willing to spend big bucks on these Cuban players, so he won't be cheap.

It is also worth mentioning that any signings above 15% of a teams international pool means a 100% fine on those dollars. A $10 million bonus for the Yankees would cost them $20 million in reality.

Cubs and Rangers can't before July 1st 2015. BOS, NYY, and TB can't July 2, 2015 or later. They can until that point with a 100% fine of whatever they spend.

I think you are correct with who bids the highest. I just read an article that speculates the contract could go 9 years and top 100M. I say go for it.

A $100 million contract for Moncada would cost any team about $200 million after they paid the fines related to it.

Reading a little closer, the signing period actually ends June 15, so BOS, NYY, or TB would need to sign him by then, or they are out completely.

Yeah, I read your previous post after I wrote that. Since you make a very valuable point...

Obviously 9 years and 100M+ isn't not very realistic for any team, even the Yanks since it will cost 200M+ overall. So what do you think some of the top bids will be? I have not got the slightest idea on how much to speculate on.

Looks like I found my "go after this guy" guy for the offseason. Put him at 2B/3B, trade Semien/Sanchez for relief pitching, wait for Tim Anderson to take over for Alexei. Keep Gillaspie for now, maybe see how Davidson does... an infield of Gillaspie, Ramirez/Anderson, Moncada, and Abreu would be incredible.

Interesting. For some reason I thought Cuban players were exempt, so I was gonna ask for more clarification, but Google is my friend. This kid's age is the difference.

Not all international players will be subject to these rules. Players in leagues deemed to be professional (those in Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Cuba apply), are at least 23 years old and have played a certain number of years in those leagues can be signed without the money counting against the pool. Yoenis Cespedes, the 26-year-old outfielder who is a free agent after defecting from Cuba for example, would not count against the pool. Neither would Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish, should he be posted by the Nippon Ham Fighters. But the money spent on Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman, who was 22 when he signed with the Reds almost two years ago, would have counted against the pool.

I am actually starting to second guess part of that though. I'm not sure how it works with a major league contract though. It states his signing bonus is hit by these pools. Does that mean if he signs a $100 million deal with no bonus, that he isn't subject to those caps? Now I am confused.

The more I read, it sounds like you are right. I guess how many "amateur" international players are available that are worth risking $100 million? Or any serious major league contract?

I agree with those of you who say we'll get this guy.

Here's the "problem" -- once again, it's going to be 3-4 years before this guys sniffs the majors. As we "rebuild," I see it as too slow a rebuild. We can't waste Sale and Abreu much more much longer. But if we sign this guy, again, we're doing so with dividends to not pay off for 3-4 years.

If I remember right, spending on the international free agents and drafts does take funds away from the mlb team, right? I'm not sure but is that what you're alluding to?

This was on fangraphs a month ago http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/yoan-moncada-game-theory/ I think a few of you are getting excited prematurely . A lot is still left to how this plays out .He's 19 and it could mean big bucks for a prospect. For anyone who balked at how much money Rodon got imagine Rodon money muliplied by 10.

I was just reading this thread and was laughing. this prospect/player is only 19 yrs old

subtract 1 yr and that made him 18, so if he played with Jose A, he was not a real factor

in the team.

he is going to need developmental time in order to get to the player he is suppose to be. he

will not make the team right off but prob minor league time.

he is going to be avail for the int'l draft, let see what develops between now and then. lets see

how the pro's talk about what it will take to get him ($$$$)
