By the Numbers...

As Rod Serling once said, "submitted for your edification..."

Feel free to discuss.

By the Numbers…

* Sox finished 76-86 this year, a three game improvement over last season.

* Sox were 40-41 at home, 36-45 on road…32-44 against the division. (Which killed them yet again)

* Sox have now had three straight losing seasons and six out of the last nine.

Historically the last stretch where the franchise had so many losing years was 1968-1980. (Two winning seasons, one .500 season,10 losing years)

* Sox haven’t had consecutive winning seasons since 2003-2006.

* Sox spent one day over .500 (18-17 on May 18th)

* Sox haven’t made the playoffs in seven years. Last time was 2008.

* Sox were shut out 12 times.

* Sox scored three runs or less in a game 83 times out of 162 played. (51%)

* Sox have lost 24 games when holding an opponent to three runs or less.

* Sox were 13-5 in extra- inning games

* Sox came from behind to win 11 games when trailing in the 7th inning or later.

Breakdown: 3 times in the 7th

3 times in the 8th

5 times in the 9th

* Sox lost 10 games where they had the lead in the 7th inning or later.

Breakdown: 3 times in the 7th

4 times in the 8th

3 times in the 9th

* Who was directly responsible for losing the lead in those games?

Breakdown: 7th inning: Petricka, Sale, Jones

8th inning: Putnam, Samardzija, Robertson, Duke

9th inning: Robertson, Robertson, Robertson

* Robin Ventura’s four year record as manager: 297-351 .458 win percentage.

Looking through the records, it appears Ventura now has the worst winning percentage for any White Sox manager to last four full seasons in franchise history.

The Sox apparently do get the #10 pick in the June draft which is protected.

That is all.

Mark

Despite the 'improvement' over last year, this was a much more frustrating season that last year IMHO. I had no expectations for the Sox in '14, and they merely lived up (down?) to those expectations. At least seeing Abreu become one of the best hitters in the game took the sting off of their record.

This year, I came into the season with hope...hope which the Sox systematically found creative and unique ways to club out of me. The losing streak to open the season, the no replay challenge game in Detroit, Shark proving to be nothing but chum, unbelievable apathy and lethargy the first half of the year, an almost laughable lack of fundamentals and of course the moribund leadership style we've all come to love so much throughout the RV years. Etc, etc, etc.

Worst of all, however, is the knowledge that it will be years if ever before any accountability is dealt out to the Sox leadership team. There is zero evidence to indicate JR has any desire to cut bait with what is an obviously failed model. Hahn is still new enough to his role to have the benefit of the doubt in my mind, but the same most emphatically can not be said for KW, Robin, and Buddy Bell. Could it be any clearer that those three have been under-performing for years in their respective roles?

The Sox have one of the best hitters and one of the best pitchers in the game, with both locked into extremely team-friendly contracts, and still...no playoffs. No post season. No pennant chase or even race for a wildcard slot. Hell, no .500. record even. Here we are at the end of another abortion of a season with little reason to expect next year will be much better than this one.

Figured I'd add a few:

Offense

27th in OBP

29th in SLG

26th in BB%

26th in wRC+

30th in WAR

Pitching

6th in K/9

14th in BB/9

14th in ERA

9th in FIP

11th in xFIP

9th in WAR

Starting Pitching

6th in K/9

11th in BB/9

14th in ERA

10th in FIP

12th in xFIP

5th in WAR

AL Pitching Ranks

3rd in K/9

7th in BB/9

7th in ERA

3rd in FIP

4th in xFIP

3rd in WAR

Fielding

28th in DRS

30th in UZR

27th in UZR/150

30th in Defensive score on Fangraphs

Looks like the Sox have A LOT to work on in the offseason. Should be interesting to see how KW and Hahn plan to remedy those numbers because they are an absolute disaster.

The Sox used the fewest amount of players this year in the majors--40 (21 pitchers). The next lowest amount were the Twins and Nationals at 44.

The average major league team used 49.5 total players, and 26.2 pitchers (not including position players getting an inning).

Too bad they didn't convert on a season with relatively good health.

BTW, 23 position players in the majors pitched this season. That used to be very rare. Of course the Sox led the league with 3- Alexei, Laroche, and Leury.
