Updated teams interested in Q

CBS Chicago’s Bruce Levine, who writes that the Astros, Yankees, Cardinals and Pirates are “dug into” the Quintana sweepstakes.

Not a big change from the teams that have been discussed in the past. The one interesting piece is the mention of the Cardinals and exclusion of the Braves.

I think the Cardinals can put together a pretty attractive package around Kelly and Perez. It was also rumored that the Cards are looking at extending Yadi, which make make Kelly expendable to them.

I can still see the Braves getting involved at some point in a blockbuster for Q and Frazier.

Interesting the Braves weren't mentioned. They are rumored to have offered a package built around Albies and Newman. It's possible they just want to wait and see where they are at in June/July.

I am doubtful of the Cards and think Levine is throwing them into the mix based on Reyes having TJ surgery. Not sure the Cards will give up the 4+ prospects it would take for them to acquire Q.

Doubtful of the Yanks. Cashman seems bent on keeping their talent and Yanks fans seem to agree. I think the only way Cashman changes his mind is if they are still hanging with Boston come June/July, which I don't believe will happen. The Yanks can simply keep their prospects and buy starting pitching next winter in free agency.

The Astros and Pirates are no surprise though. If this drags out into June/July then I think the Dodgers will be in the mix as well. Don't know if Seattle would be willing to give up the haul for Q (like the Cards ) but if they are hanging with the Astros and Rangers come June/July they might become desperate enough.

Dead arm usually happens a couple months into the season though, to have it a couple games in to ST isnt a good omen. He's supposed to be their reliable one too lol.

Guys hit dead arm in Spring Training all the time. Hell, they hit dead arm all throughout the year. Obviously it's something to keep an eye on, but I don't read much into a guy who has dead arm.

It could legitimately be dead arm and his arm just needs some time to recover, it could be that he has some sort of injury, it could be that his stuff is worsening for any number of reasons, or any number of other things. Unless they do a medical evaluation and find significant damage, I wouldn't read too much into it.

The Cards are an interesting add because it serves two purposes, adds another team that can drive up the price and puts pressure on the Pirates to keep him away from a division opponent.

I think the Braves will check in during the summer if they are still in striking distance. They have put a lot of resources into going for it this year, the first year in their new park.

I don't know what to make of the Braves to be honest. They signed Danks, Colon, Dickey and traded for Garcia. Those moves tell me they are looking for place holders while they wait for their young pitching to become MLB ready. I do not doubt the Braves interest, just their level of interest at this point, much like the Cards. The Braves, Cards, Astros and Pirates appear to be content in waiting to see what they have and where they are at when June/July comes around. This would be great for the Sox if all four of those teams remain competitive. Add in the possibility of other contenders such as the Rangers, Mariners and cubs jumping into the mix and there could be a heck of a bidding war for Q. That bidding war has the potential to get crazy if Archer and Gray fail to bounce back.

I think Hahn is doing the right thing in waiting for the right offer to come to him. The payoff could be huge by waiting for teams to become desperate.

Can't we pretty much ignore Levine in general? When was the last time he actually broke Sox news? Bringing in Eddie Collins?

Damn near 100% now that we are looking at a July bidding war for Quintana, which could turn out to be the best decision the Sox could make

What a great feeling it would be to unload Quintana for a huge haul of prospects from a contender

This makes it sound again like the deals that fell apart were NOT a Q deal.

In an interview with MLB.com’s Scott Merkin, White Sox GM Rick Hahn again stated that there’s “no economic pressure” and “no timing pressure” to trade left-hander Jose Quintana. “It’s more about making sure if we were to make a major move, that we are getting an appropriate return,” Hahn continued. While the Sox have had numerous trade discussions centering on Quintana this winter, Hahn noted that there’s yet to be an offer presented to the team that made the front office think, “Boy we better move now or we are going to be kicking ourselves.” The South Side GM also once again touched on a few significant trades that fell through at the eleventh hour, noting that the “frustration lingers a little longer than the satisfaction of getting a deal done.”

He must have thrown too much in the offseason to be coming down with dead arm at the start of ST.

More pitchers need to take a page out of Mark Buehrle's book and stop throwing completely through the winter. That could be why Mark was so durable.

I kinda doubt the Cardinals would pay what it would take for Q. I think it'd be more likely that they would have interest in Gonzalez.

I think you're spot on with Gonzalez, he's a good fit for what they would be looking for. Gonzalez is a good one year place holder for Reyes.
