2018 MLB Draft Order

The White Sox have the 4th pick in the 2018 draft but their 2nd round pick will continue to move around until the end of the offseason. I will continue to update this list as the offseason goes on. There are 30 1st round picks and there are 9 Competitive Balance Round A picks. Also, once Cobb, Hosmer, Cain, Moustakas, Holland, and Sanatan sign, those teams get 1st round picks between the 1st round and competitive balance round. I will assume they sign and put the picks in to start and then take away and move the White Sox 2nd rounder up as guys off the the board. The Cubs and Cardinals will receive picks after the 2nd round once Arrieta, Davis and Lynn sign elsewhere. Carlos Santana signed a 3 year $60 million deal with the Phillies. The Phillies will forfeit their 2nd round pick to do so thus moving the White Sox from #49 to #48.

Wade Davis signed a 3 year $52 million deal with Colorado today. The Rockies have to forfeit their 3rd highest pick in order to do this. The Rockies pick at #22 and have a Competitive Balance pick at #44. Once Greg Holland signs, they'll get a pick after round 1. Once that happens, they'll forfeit #44 which moves the White Sox up another spot.

So this moves the Sox up to 47 regardless. Either the Rockies don't get the pick for losing Holland or they do lose him and get the pick but then lose the competitive balance pick.

Not necessarily true. The Rockies technically give up their 3rd pick. If Holland re-signs with them (highly unlikely) they'd forfeit their actual 2nd rounder which doesn't move Sox up at all.

Right, but in the draft order you have listed already accounts for them getting the pick and that pushing us to 48, so if they don't get it then we are 47.

I see the Rockies performed a nice feat of arbitrage, letting Holland go and signing Davis and moving up 9 spots in the process.

Speaking of which, I'm not up on the rules, but why do the Rockies have to lose a pick for signing Davis? I assume he wasn't given a QO, or the Cubs would be on that post-first round list of extra picks.

It's complicated so I'll try to explain. Large market teams that offered QO now get a pick after the 2nd round. So the Cubs will get 2 picks after the 2nd round for Arrieta and Davis. Those 6 teams that I listed after the 1st round are all considered small market teams that receives revenue sharing. Those teams still get a pick after round 1 for losing a free agent that offer a QO to. Revenue sharing recipients lose their 3rd highest pick to sign a QO FA. Big market revenue providers (Sox lumped in here) forfeit their 2nd choice to sign a FA. Teams that are over the luxury tax line (SF, Washington, Boston, LAD) would forfeit their 2nd and 5th rounder to sign a QO FA. Does this help?

Thanks Jimmy.

And it certainly looks like a system that can be "worked" by small market teams, like the Rockies did. Instead of re-signing your own guy, let him go, sign a player from another team, and move up in the draft.

It's especially helpful because all those teams receive competitive balance picks as well. The White Sox will never get those.

This could also be a reason as to why they would rather have Darvish instead of Arrieta. Recover at least something by letthing him walk and not having to give up anything to sign Darvish as opposed to Cobb and Lynn.

Exactly. If they sign Darvish, they will have their 1st rounder, 2nd rounder and two additional picks after round $2. That probably gets them close to an additional $3 million to spend on the draft. It's not a huge deal when you are trying to championships but it doesn't hurt. They need to reload that system a bit.

Eric Hosmer signed an 8 year deal with the San Diego Padres. The Padres will forfeit their 3rd selection (2nd round) and the Royals get a comp pick after 1st round for losing Hosmer. Nothing below changes for White Sox. Moustakas, Holland, Arrieta, Cobb and Lynn are the remaining free agents with compensation attached

Okay so the draft order is completely updated and ready at this point. It can be found here:https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/royals-tigers-have-largest-bonus-draft-allotments/.

I will post the list up until White Sox 2nd pick. Cubs, Cubs, Cardinals, Rockies all get picks after round 2 for Arrieta, Davis, Lynn and Holland. They don't affect the White Sox 1st or 2nd pick.

I learned that you can't lose competitive balance picks for qualified FAs (cardinals with Holland woulld have a comp pick be their pick normally they give up)

and it made me hate comp balance picks even more.

I actually learned this too while the site was down. It's pretty irritating. The Twins still have 3 selections before the one they forfeited to sign Lance Lynn. Teams like Sox and Phillies are really at a disadvantage. Philly had to forfeit the 3rd selection in the 2nd round to sign Santana and the 3rd selection in the 3rd round to sign Arrieta. The Twins and Brewers gave up their 3rd rounders for Lynn and Cain but still have their 1st, 2nd, and a competitive balance selection. It's insane

They have enough money to sign premier free agents but also need to be protected and rewarded with what has become one of the most valuable assets in the game.

sox have the 6th highest pool a $10,589,900 pick at 4, 46, 81, 108 and 138 etc

Can't wait to see the Prospect rankings going into '19 with this ammo

Doubt Jimenez, Kopech, or Robert graduate and should all be Top 10 prospects league-wide

2019 Prospect List should look like:

1. Jimenez...Top bat in baseball, in Opening day 2019 roster discussion

2. Robert...Top 10 prospect in baseball, in Opening day 2019 roster discussion

3. Kopech...One of the best arms in baseball, in Opening day 2019 roster discussion

4. 2018 first rounder

5. Hansen...Ace potential, in Opening day 2019 roster discussion

6. Cease...Takes major leap, should be up at some point in 2019

7. Dunning...Continues dominance, should be up at some point in 2019

8. Collins...Continues to improve, up at some point in '19

9. Basabe...Have a feeling he rounds out the Top 100 a year from now after a monster '18, probably has a 2020 ETA

10. Adolfo...Hits very well in '18 and is borderline Top 100

This doesn't mention Rutherford who I'm not big on for '18 and Burger who was projected to have a big '18 before the injury nor the 2018 second rounder, Sheets, Burdi, etc.

Jesus

Looks like 6 Top 30 guys, and 9 Top 100 guys a year from now
