I Was on a Game Show Thread

Back in October my wife and I went to the Price is Right when we were in LA. I ended up being called to "Come on Down", won the bidding, got on stage for a game and won a TV, elliptical, Marc Jacobs handbags, a telescope, and a home vending machine. It was really fun. The episode aired today and of course as I'm in a room full of 20 coworkers ready to see it...right when it was supposed to start, on comes some breaking news report about a police probe that blocks the entire 1 hour show. It was pretty disappointing because I hadn't told any of them anything in the past 3 months except that my wife and I went to see the price is right, it was fun, and that the episode would be on the air on 1/13.

Oh well, at least its online.

Anyways....I thought this might be an interesting thread for people to share about times they were on game shows, tv shows, or have won contests.

I was in LA with a buddy many years ago and we went to TPIR with Bab Barker. They were passing out tickets in front of the Chinese Theater. We didnt get on stage but saw ourselves a lot and the guy we met in line did get to play. His name was Bud, he was from South Dakota and was on vacation with his daughter and ex daughter in law in an RV. He won the initial bidding because everyone but himself went over, he then had the game where you pick numbers out of a bag and there put them in their proper place for the price of a car. His was a Corvette. You have 3 strikes. He picked out numbers 3 times that were wrong, picked those same numbers and tried to put them in the same spots. It was unreal. He still wound up winning the Corvette. Of course he then spins a dollar so he goes to the showdown where he bids $11 k on a showcase that winds up being around $40k. The other guy was over so Bud wins about $90k in cash and prizes. You wouldn't beleive how crazy the place went. Watching it didn't do it justice, but Bob said Bud you have a lot of fans.

We went back to the theater and they were passing out free tickets to watch them tape Seinfeld. So we went to that as well. It was the one Poppie peed on the couch.

I was never on a TV Show but I was on Sports Jeapordy on the Score and made it to the finals, where I lost. I was in studio when it was on Belmont with the heavy rule crew. They wanted to know my job. I told them I was a petroleum transfer technition. Terry thought I drove the big boats.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but did they give you a tax bill on all that stuff? I also wondered how that worked

Back in the late 80's, my then girlfriend went with a bunch of her friends to LA for spring break and wound up winning a Yugo (among a few other prizes) on TPIR. It was such a hassle just getting the car as there were very few dealers in So. IL at the time and even brand new it really seemed like a POS car.

So how does that work? You basically get a voucher for a car of the brand you win, and you can go choose as you please?

I showed up with a bunch of friends to a Sunday Sox game and we're hanging out tailgating. Someone points out Kip Lewis in the parking lot and sure enough he was accompanied by the Beer Money crew. Empowered by the liquid courage of a few alcoholic beverages, almost my entire crew signs up to participate. 2 of my friends were Cubs fans, did Cubs trivia. They nailed it and took $130. My other buddy did solo Sox trivia and nailed it, won the $130. Myself and another friend did guess that Sox player and luckily he was with me: for the life of me I could not think of the player. That he played at Kent State should have been a dead giveaway for me. It was not for me, but it was for my friend and he nailed it and we split $80 between us. It was a really unexpected, really cool thing to happen that I'm sure we will all remember, even though the show is mostly filler for rain delays and late night TV.

It was a long time ago but IIRC...They asked her if she where she was from so they could find a local dealer to arrange the car's pickup (and I assume the type of car, options, etc). They contacted her about a week after she came back to school and said they couldn't find her car near us and offered the cash value or a car from a dealer in St. Louis area. We were in Carbondale and she was FROM St. Louis so going there to get car was no big deal. The show arranged it with the dealer..She went in. Signed a few papers. I guess the show or dealer alerted the local paper as there was a reporter there for a pic/interview.

Yeah Uncle Sam is always the real winner and a lot of people end up just declining the prizes because of it.

Everything you win counts as income. So I owe 7% to the state of California, then the rest of your income adds onto what you already make for your tax bracket for federal, so for me 25% to federal. PIR claims the value of my winnings is almost 9k. So as of right now my taxes look like $630 to CA and $2,250. The reality is that I would probably only get about 3k if I sold all my stuff on craigslist/ebay/etc. And that doesn't take into account any kind of fees or any I have to pay to sell on ebay (10%)

So from what I've read, I will need to document the fair market value of these items around the time I receive them. Then on my 2017 taxes I can dispute what PIR puts on my 1099 and provide documentation about the real value of the prizes comes out to be. I think that will help me get away with paying the true amount of taxes.

I don't need to pay any of the federal taxes now, but CA state requires PIR to have people pay up front. So I had to get cashiers check and send it. Once they receive that, they will send me the prizes in the next 3 months.

I'd have ran with the cash value.

My wife was on Wheel of Fortune a few years ago. She did well and won about $11,000 but another guy won more than that on the one puzzle he solved. Stupid Express

Mostly paid for our trip to Greece though.

So jealous. I watch that show with my kid every single day now, I would love to be on it. They had a casting call in Rosemont recently, but I heard it was a madhouse and I hate people, so I didn't even go over there.

You guys who have been on TV, post the videos if they are online! I'm sick of googling.

But to answer the question, one or both of my brothers were on Bozo the Clown to do the Bozo Buckets. Oldest brother was also on Jerry Springer, not as a guest, but as an audience member in the front row and was told by Steve Wilkos to talk s*** and jump on stage, which he did. We've since lost the VHS tape, unfortunately.

You can apply to be on on their website. I think they then ask you to submit a video saying your name, job, fun facts etc. They just want to make sure you are loud/energetic enough to be good on tv. If so, they invite you to come to one of their casting call things where you solve some sample puzzles and do a little mock show type thing. (again, they are most worried about how you'll be on tv. My wife is a teacher so she had no problem with that part)

I'm going to guess the person who claims he "hates people" isn't going to be the rah rah energetic guy on film. But maybe I'm wrong, haha. Maybe littlehurt has a switch that he can flip.
