2016-2017 NBA Thread

This whole Rose story obviously reeks of the fact that he is so mentally weak. Basically, he got benched and thought to himself, am I better off just not playing the game. By and large, I think he has not really wanted to play basketball since he had his injuries. It shows in his play. Its unfortunate, because if he had Westbrooks' attitude, Rose would still be one of the top PG's in the league (imo). I fully believe his lack of production is tied to his indifference to basketball vs. any physical limitations.

But hey, its up to him at the end of the day. But the guy has pretty much milked a ton of money. I think it is the definition of the worse thing that can happen when you hand out a big contract. If Rose got hurt and physically was never the same, fine, I understand. If Rose busted his but but just sucked, fine. Instead, we got a guy, who yes, got hurt, but kind of quit on everything post injury and who never was able to make the true mental adjustment to recover and largely is so meh over basketball. It is so evident in his play / lack of effort you would consistently see post-injury (on the court). I even wonder how true those "workout" stories were of him during his recovery (1st recovery I fully believe...but that 2nd one and he was done).

Deadspin just tweeted that Rose thought about walking away from basketball.

I swear this dude is a mental midget. Amazing that his ACL completely ruined his career.

It was much more than his ACL, he tore his meniscus...twice. Westbrook is some type of special but some people just can't handle it. The very thing/s that made him special were damaged multiple times. I don't care what anybody says, no matter how much money you make, that messes with many people

It is amazing that he went from such a determined bad ass to a complete pile of jello.

I hate armchair sports psychology but that sounds a lot like depression.

And it's being reported now that he wants a max deal in the offseason. Dude is basically an 11 year old in an adult body. I'm so glad he's not part of the landscape here anymore.

Well there were rumors the night he went missing that he might retire. That seemed like the only thing that would make sense to just no show like that.

Guess the Knicks super team isn't cutting it

What are the Bulls going to do? What is the plan? I heard Mark Schanowski on with Bernstein and Rozner yesterday and he made the situation sound completely hopeless. The Bulls flirted with the idea of trading Jimmy Butler at the draft. They went a different path. They signed Rondo in a pure marketing/desperation move. Then Dwyane Wade feel into their laps. The perceived plan is that Wade and Butler will bring in free agents and they'll remain a fringe contender. The Bulls organization sees value in making the playoffs. They think that's what attracts free agents. Free agents and players like stability. The new CBA has destroyed this plan though. The NBA has basically created a franchise tag. When guys like DeMarcus Cousins will take a 5 year deal in Sacramento at over $200 million, to stay on a terrible team, the plan needs to be altered. I'm not saying that they should definitely trade Jimmy Butler. They should definitely explore the possibility though. I realize that he's a star and that it'd be nuts to trade him. How will they ever get good without dealing him though? They might have 2 1st round picks in the teens this year. They could spin off Gibson for something minor. Then what though? Butler, Wade and some young possible role players? I see only 1 possible solution to this problem. Trade Butler for an absolute haul. Deal Wade for something. Trade Gibson. Bottom out and pick in the lottery for a few years. If you don't hit on those picks, then yes you're terrible. If you hit on a couple though, you can lock those guys up forever. Otherwise, I think this team could add pieces around Jimmy and compete for the 6th seed every year. What's the point of that though?

They have no plan. Do just enough to keep the turnstiles moving and grab an 8 seed and repeat.

Last night, Hoiberg gave Paul Zipser, a rookie with 47 career minutes and a career 1-16 shooting line coming into the game, his first start matched up defensively against Carmelo Anthony. He then played him 34 minutes. he was a -16 on the game.

Yes, Mirotic and Butler were out with illness. Yes there were other people who were as bad - Taj put up a -20. Yes he wanted better defense than McDermott would bring. Yes that did not decide the game. Just stand back and ask yourself whether that makes any sense to you on paper. The guy has had basically 1 D-league appearance this year and he got 34 minutes guarding Melo.

He wanted McDermott to come off the bench. Yeah, it looks goofy, but it didn't change the game, and Zipster actually started out pretty well. It didn't last.

There's plenty to nail Hoiberg on, but a bad roster, depleted, isn't one of them.

One thing I've noticed is Wade looks a lot older the last couple of weeks from a playing standpoint than he did at the beginning of the season.

Anyone think the Bulls might target Dragic in a trade? No idea what the Heat would want (and clearly we don't have a ton to offer, but we could offer the expirings needed to free up there cap space and start a rebuild).

I don't really see it working. The Heat are going to want back at least what they paid to get him.

Miami sent two first-round picks -- one that will be used in either 2017, 2018 or 2019, the other in 2021 -- to the Suns, who also get Danny Granger from the Heat. Also leaving Miami are guard Norris Cole, forward Shawne Williams and center Justin Hamilton, all headed to the Pelicans.

I'd rather have the two first round picks than put more into this roster.

As one of the last holdovers, I want to point out, that the more I look at the free agent market, etc, the more open I become towards the idea of tanking. I don't think the Celtics alone can provide the package we want, but they are probably the best destination spot for a Buckets trade (not saying we need to do it now, although you could), mainly because if I moved Butler, I'd want lots of high picks plus young players with lots of time left on cheap contracts. I hate the idea of giving up Butler, cause he's so freaking good and so cheap, but if we got the right offer, I'd be 100% on board at this point.

Boston has young assets: Crowder, Smart, Bradley, Jaylen Brown. They also have Nets 1st this year in a swap. Also have Brooklyn's #1 pick in 2018 and LAC and Memphis' 1st round picks in 2019. If Boston wants Jimmy Butler, they can absolutely get it done. They need to pony up though.

See, I'm not that interested in Crowder, Smart, or Bradley (unless we are spinning them to a 3rd team). Jaylen Brown I'd have some interest in (in the sense that he is younger so you have him on a cheap deal for longer). I obviously am interested in the picks, but even then, lots of uncertainty as to where they will fall out given the lottery. I'd need a lot from Boston to do it and if I'm getting Crowder / Bradley / Smart, I want another team lined up to get them and give me more high picks or guys more akin to Brown (recent draft picks who I have around on cheap deals longer...as your winning plan can only succeed, imo, if you can develop enough talent on rookie / cheap deals who you can supplement with some big name stars (while everyone is under rookie deals). Ideally you get a transformative player with one of those picks, but that is a major crapshoot given lottery, etc.

If I had a Crowder, maybe I'm talking to the Lakers who see him as a better fit long-term vs. Russell (who maybe doesn't fit with Ingram who they seem to be grooming into a point forward). Russel is on my short list of guys that I think are attaintable who will at some point blow up. I think year three is going to be a good one from him. He's made major strides this year, but struggles a lot with consistency (and some of that is to be expected). Lakers may not be patient with him.

I'm torn on trading Butler. Historically the return from trading superstars has been pretty s***ty, and you are looking at once again turning Chicago into the last place any FA is going to want to go.

On the other hand, this team defines mediocrity

I agree with you and I'm very torn. I finally opened up to moving him, but it would take an absurd package, because I still think with Jimmy, you are a lot closer to the top then the bottom and I look at the Lakers, who have largely tanked, and I still see them being a long ways away. If the Lakers can't sign big name FA's when you have a roster of young players, Bulls are going to have an even harder time.
