You guys are buying the 8/280 offer like it's NOT a ploy to get Sox to pay up. WHEN IT IS.

So if Machado would sign that deal why not get it done?

280/8 is crazy. 35 mil a year. If that’s the case, I can’t even blame the Sox for losing.

What's the current going rate for WAR? $9 million/WAR? Manny has averaged over 5 WAR/162 for his career, but the Sox would be paying him like a 4 WAR (More like 3 WAR toward the back end of the contract) player. How is that too much?

Sox probably have the rumored 8/250 on the table, IMHO.

Correct me if I’m wrong, if the Sox offered a signing bonus it would be taxes just the same as SD’s signing bonus - 0% since he STILL lives in FL. So I really don’t see the advantage there

I think the implied message is that the Sox aren't willing to include such a signing bonus

If the White Sox have 8/$250 on the table and it would take $280 to get him to sign, they should already have this done.

And this is why you don’t leave the door open for some owner to get excited about the possibility of adding a superstar and talk himself into spending more than people thought.

Exactly!

You have multiple people saying the pads offer is over 280 and you are going to risk it for...what exactly?

Too many people have bought into the fact that the worst thing Sox can do is bid against themselves. Worst that can happen is they fail to sign him.

 BOB BOMB

If the Sox can’t beat that offer, then either Reinsdorf is a cheap fuck or Hahn has no idea what a player like Machado is really worth.  Just offer 8/$270M and end this thing now.

But that extra $4 million per year might pay the key backup catcher for the title run.

Teams better be careful with giving him to big of a signing bonus, if they are also going to give opt outs after 2 or 3 years.

I hope you're right. Also, I maintain that if the Sox weren't willing to go to at least 35M AAV they weren't serious anyway.

So what do the Phillies fans think, when they visit SoxTalk and see we have dedicated 741 pages to "Manny Mania" It's been a blast guys, I'll tell ya that.

Remember back in October when everyone thought Manny would get 300-350? The Sox should have no problem going above 280 if they are serious, which I believe they are.

I dunno 8/240 but with a 20MM signing bonus probably nixes any tax differences with a similar offer from the Sox. The Sox can get around that, of course, by upping the offer.

I must be drunk or something, but how does a $20M signing bonus change anything?  The remaining $220M of the contract you’re proposing would be worth 5% less playing for the Padres, which is worth about $11M.  And why can’t we offer a signing bonus if that’s ultimately important?

Same, but it feels like it's Manny or bust at this point.

Padres with Machado and Tatis for next decade is worse than cubs signing either to me. Just a team created by white Sox failure.
