  1. I like it more than last year's plan of "watch first basemen in the outfield."

  2. I donated $5. I think it’s great. I don’t even live in Illinois but f*** Jerry. I’ve spent $5 on much dumber s%*# in my life.

  3. Hard working ballplayer. I wish him well and success.

  4. Yeah sell the team, when the owner pays a top 10 payroll in baseball and the weak ass fan base doesn't shop up to any games.

  5. I can't believe people actually put money into this.

  6. 2 years 12 mil for Andrus is an awful deal no matter where he plays. He had a hot month or so but his larger sample size going back to 2018 is right on par with Leury. No idea why people are so terrified that we can’t get .240 BA with a .700 OPS production out of Romy/Sosa. Continuously blocking young players with mediocre (at best) production isn’t the direction this team should be going.

  8. I wouldn't have offered him a big league contract either. If he got one, congrats to him.

  13. He's still very fast and has one of the best arms in baseball. Right now he's our best option for 4th OFer.

  14. Did somebody say incentive based contract?

  15. Steve Phillps the former GM, was talking about this on MLBN the other day. He said there is no way to get insurance on a pre existing condition. Correa's contract, no matter where he signs, is uninsurable.

  16. While I agree that the Sox should cut Leury and keeping him shows that they're not as serious about winning as they could be, but that said, there is no reason to cut him until Spring Training. You never know if you're going to have a few injuries. You're going to be paying him regardless so might as well wait to the last minute.

  17. January 6, 2005 - Needing catching help, Sox G.M. Ken Williams took a gamble and inked catcher A.J. Pierzynski to a free agent contract. A.J., who had a reputation as a ‘clubhouse cancer’ turned out to be a model teammate and his contributions to the 2005 World Series champs, would be incalculable. Sox announcer Ken “Hawk” Harrelson pitched A.J. to the front office since he knew him for a number of years (both lived in Florida) and got the organization to take the chance. Two of the most memorable A.J. moments took place in 2005. The first came on June 18 when he hit an opposite field home run to cap a four run ninth inning as the Sox beat the Dodgers 5-3. The Sox were wearing 1959 replica uniforms for the game. The second and far more important moment, came on October 12, the second game of the A.L.C.S. With the Sox down a game to the Angels and tied in the ninth, Pierzynski struck out then started running to first base as former Sox player Josh Paul, the Angels catcher, rolled the ball back towards the mound thinking the inning was over. A.J. thought the ball hit the dirt and was trapped which required a put out at first base. Umpire Doug Eddings agreed and Pierzynski got the base. The play led to the eventual winning run, evening the best of seven series which the Sox went on to win in five games to get to their first World Series since 1959. Another 'classic' A.J. moment came on May 20, 2006 during a Cubs/Sox game at U.S. Cellular Field. Scoring the first run in an eventual 7-0 Sox win, A.J. got tangled up with catcher Michael Barrett and went back to touch home plate. As he was doing so, he bumped Barrett which resulted in the Cub player losing it and sucker punching him. Four players wound up being ejected in the fight.

  19. Best of luck to him but when you're a defensive replacement and drop a foul ball that leads to a big loss....I'm ready to move on.

  22. And you should be annoyed. This is the Fangraphs article on the 2023 Int'l amateur class https://blogs.fangraphs.com/board-update-2023-international-amateur-prospects/ It's basically a ranking of the top 33 guys. All are slated to receive $2M+ . 25 of the 32 teams are projected to sign those 33 players . Of those 25 teams 8 of them are projected to sign 2 of those players (Dodgers, Cubs, AZ, CLE. ,Minn., TOR., Hous., and BOS. ) The Sox are among the 7 teams not on that list . I'd venture to guess that a certain amount have had commitments for a couple of years now , but to suggest that the majority of them have had commitments for a while is saying most of the teams are doing underhanded things the Sox aren't doing is BS. The average age of these players looks to be about 17 years old. It appears as if either the Sox aren't signing anyone for $2M or if they are they don't appear to be high in the rankings. I know it is difficult to rate these players so Longenfeld is basing it on the bonuses and then scouting the players after he knows what their bonuses are going to be. Over 50% of these players are from the DR.

  23. I think its fair to say that JR has been a lousy owner. Still, to put up a billboard telling him to sell the team is a complete waste of money.

  24. Ordinarily I wouldn't care too much about Hamilton, but I wonder with the new base running rules, new bases, and new defensive rules, maybe his value without his bat goes way up. Especially if we have a manager that is skilled enough to take advantage of it.

  25. If/when Elvis wants or has to settle for a backup IF job, I'd be interested. I don't really want to sign him to start though.

  26. Solid enough pick-up. Also, likewise, he found himself a solid place to perhaps find playing time. Hopefully he doesn't play for us, but if he does, at least we have a good defender.

  27. No. The answer is no. We'll never know for sure, but I am sticking with no. Any other scenario is too hard to hard to bear. Did I mention no?

  28. Really confuse Marwin Gonzalez and Jake Marisnick, eh?
    1 point
  29. It depends on what their contracts say. They are all milb guys, so no they don't have to be on the 40 man. They likely have opt out dates if they haven't been added to the active roster. Hamilton and Marisnick almost certainly will. Reyes maybe not since he doesn't have much of a track record.

  30. No, some veteran minor league contracts come with clauses saying "If this person is not added to a big league roster by (for example) May 1, they have the right to be released from this contract". Often done for veterans who know they may or may not get roster spots, which is what all of these guys are. Apparently there's actually a clause in the last CBA that requires it for some players. Both Marisnick and Billy Hamilton would have qualified in 2022. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/04/several-veterans-on-minor-league-deals-have-sunday-opt-outs.html

  31. Marisnick was at one time an absolute wizard in the OF. I am sure he’s not quite that but this is a very good guy to get on an milb deal. Instantly jumps to top of the 4th OF depth chart imo.

  32. March 21, 1997 - The Sox suffered a major blow to their hopes for a championship when star third baseman Robin Ventura destroyed his ankle and lower leg on a slide at home plate in a spring game against the Red Sox. The injury was so horrific that a woman sitting in the stands passed out when she saw the result. It was caused because his spikes caught in the wet, muddy, ground. The result was that Ventura’s foot was pointed 180 degrees opposite of the way a foot is supposed to be. The injury took place only 10 days before the season opener and the Sox were left in a state of shock. G. M. Ron Schueler announced to the media the team would be looking for a replacement, and then did nothing to fill the void staying in-house with Greg Norton and Chris Snopek. They combined for five home runs and 36 RBI’s in 105 games. Thankfully after a rigorous rehabilitation process, Robin would be back to play in 54 games that season and continue to have an outstanding Major League career after he left the Sox as a free agent.

  33. I’m getting the feeling that the odds of us signing a legit 4th OF’er are dwindling. Throw a bunch of warm bodies at the problem and see if anything sticks seems to be the plan.

  34. Looks like he robbed Benintendi 3 times on this highlight reel. Also Tim got doubled off 1st on a nice grab. Eloy robbed also. Not sure how old most of these are but he's still a very good fielder.

  36. It would if it was actually dead spending. I obviously am not privy to Correa's medical records, but I think the chances he comes dead money anytime soon is remote.

  37. Who? There isn't a better alternative on the 40 man roster. They're paying Leury regardless. Cutting Leury and signing like Jonathan Villar - what does that accomplish other than spending more $? The constant Leury handwringing is so dumb. It was a terrible deal; we can all agree on that. But there really is no reason to cut him right now.
    1 point
  38. yes. Similar to Grandal, cutting either of them makes 0 sense since we are already paying them and clearly don't have the money to sign their replacements. Keep them until they need to be cut.

  39. Of everything that went wrong last season, the team's handling of injuries (for the majority of the season, not so much post-TLR) is still the most puzzling aspect to me.

  41. As an emergency cover I have no issue with Eloy getting a few appearances in OF, but his bat is his primary tool not his fielding and with his injury history the less opportunity for injuring himself in the OF the better. The way he hit last backend when primarily DHing is too valuable to the team to have him miss half a season, again, on some silly injury picked up in the OF (I know he was injured base running last season but that can't be avoided!).

  42. As long as JR owned the club if TLR was healthy, he'd be the manager.
