Kimbrel sucking doesn't mean Madrigal is good. It's a bad trade because Kimbrel sucked, not that we gave away a ton for him.

Part of the evaluation is based on the results. I disagree on the Madrigal opinion, but agree on the results oriented evaluation of the deal. This deal was always done because the Sox expected it to push them over the top to win the ‘ship. You had better win it all if you make this kind of deal. But unfortunately, the Sox specialize in this sort of miscalculation. Over and over.

It sounds ridiculous because it is. Kimbrel can go pound sand if the reason his ERA has jumped 5 runs(!!!) is because he’s been mostly pitching the 8th instead of the 9th. Are you kidding? He’s been coming into games in arguably bigger situations than closing a game…if he can’t get mentally prepared for that, that’s totally on him.

Eh, I don’t think you project what you think-a player *should* be able to do when making an acquisition. You get him for what he has proven he can do. Doing the former is asking for trouble. Thats on Hahn, not Kimbrel. If you do cowboy trades like that, you don’t give up a major asset that’s for sure.

Kimbrel still has a shot of redeeming himself but it is not looking good. The funny thing is Hahn has made a couple trades so bad the Semien and Bassett for 1 year of Shark never even gets mentioned in his blunders.

Well I was hoping Kimbrel would be able to rehab his trade value in the post season at least. Best laid plans and all that. Kimbrel has never been a good pitcher until he became a closer. If Sox plan was to alter his success pattern, ridiculous. Whoever said we can’t blame the FO is being generous.

yeah, I mean, the Sox get blown up in asset trades to aquire veterans, yet the beat goes on and on. They will do it again next year, mark my words.

we are still ahead, but they made up some ground. We could not help ourselves I guess.  Maybe Hahn should take note that he wins trades when HE is the one trading the veteran.

Just sad. All of the posters who clamor for guys who have the physical skills but lack the ballplayer instincts make me sick. When you watch the Astros, you see guys like Altuve who just know how to play the game. Guy is 5'6 and weighs 166 lbs according to baseball reference. Yet, all of you people who marginalized Madrigal who was of similar physical stature were so happy to dump him. Makes me sick to my stomach just thinking of his contact rate, batting average, solid glove, and baseball instincts and knowing he was deemed expendable. You need guys like Madrigal more than you need guys like Moncada.

Scouting report aside, we wasted an asset. 2 assets

Abreu is fine at 1B, Eloy is a full-time DH on any properly run team, TA is serviceable at SS, Moncada above average with a questionable arm, CF is locked down, RF = hole, C = DH playing out of position

Abreu is more than fine. But there is a logjam behind him and the organization has to move forward. Its not working.

The team is just not constructed very well for defense.

The white Sox are one of the worst defensive teams in the majors (25th on fangraphs).

Jose, eloy, Vaughn, sheets, Collins are all distinctly negative defenders only moncada, Robert and Tim are above average (leury about average).

The question is what are you doing about it?

Jose, Vaughn, sheets, burger are all talented hitters who should play nowhere but first or DH but there are only two of those spots.

They have to make some hard decisions. I think the Abreu era is over. A solid direction is needed, and it has to do with defense and the little things like baserunning.  Some sacred cows may have to be sacrificed. The baseball character of this group is fatally flawed
