  1. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 10, 2010 -> 11:54 AM)
    jesus, i just can't imagine that's worth it...by the time the dude gets up his contract will have one or two years, thenyou have to pay him a legit contract again?! I don't think cubano can claim the MLB hates the cubans after this deal, and how it f***s over strassbuerger or whatever haha.

    Actually, you just reminded me. He could be teammates with Strasburg. I think the Nationals were in on him too.

    They need to go to a worldwide draft, with slotting. I think that will be addressed in the next CBA.

  2. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 06:29 PM)
    Jay Mariotti came out publicly on Around the Horn and said he didn't vote for Alomar on the first ballot because "no one belongs on the first ballot" or some spewing bulls***, and I'm pretty sure he didn't vote for Blyleven because he said something like "if it's been this long then he obviously doesn't deserve it."

    I hope that man is sterilized.

    I'm not defending Mariotti, but on the Blyleven thing...it's interesting where he was in the voting early in his eligibility:

    1998- 17.5%

    1999- 14.1%

    2000- 17.4%

    2001- 23.5%

    It wasn't until his 5th year when he got over 25% of the votes. It's an obvious sign that the criteria to get in the Hall has loosened over the years. I think in this new era, you can just look at his 287 wins and 3700 K's and automatically say YES, but if you did a little deeper, you could say he falls just short of Hall status.

    They say it's the top 1% of players that get in the Hall. I think we're getting to the point where it's the top 1.5-2%, and I don't necessarily think it's a bad thing. We all know who are all-time greats even with the current guys in the Hall. If more players are recognized, I don't have a huge problem with that. I mean, we're coming off an era of baseball that just s*** all over the record book. The Hall of Fame is almost becoming irrelevant anyway.

  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 06:11 PM)
    The Segui/Karros/Hentgen type votes are from the people who dont want the Alomars and Blylevens in the hall of fame. They are excuse picks.

    Is there full disclosure about who votes for who? If there isnt and this is entirely secretive, then it should be exposed, because these hacks need to have their vendettas and politics thrown back in their faces.

    One doesn't have to do with the other. Voters can vote up to 10 players, I believe. If they aren't allowed to vote for Segui, Karros, Ventura, etc., then why were they put on the ballot in the first place? I'm not saying the process and who votes is perfect, because it's not. But the guys that get one or a handful of votes, I really don't think it's a big deal. They get a little nod from a friend, and then they're off the ballot next year. No big deal.

  4. QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 03:23 PM)
    Heard on the radio that spitting in an umps face is in fact the very reason that he didn't make it on the first ballot. Eh... I don't know if he actually did it on purpose though. Oh well... he'll get in next year won't he?

    Blyleven and Alomar are locks next year unless Alomar shows up on a list. And no, I don't think he juiced.

  5. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 02:38 PM)
    How does Tim Raines only get 30% of the vote? That is even more ridiculous than Alomar not getting in on the 1st ballot.

    I like Raines, don't get me wrong. But here's my problem with him:

    He had a great career for about 7 years (1981-1987), then he was just kinda there for the rest of his career. Not really close to being one of the best players in baseball after that.

    I just don't think the flame was lit long enough. If he extended that greatness for about 3-4 more years, he would be more of a slam dunk.

  6. QUOTE (earthshiner @ Jan 6, 2010 -> 01:44 PM)
    Its sad to see the HOF turn more into a joke each year. Its turning into the Hall of Really Good

    I agree with that, but I'll also say it's becoming harder and harder to decide who belongs.

    And next year, they'll have Jeff Bagwell, Larry Walker, and Rafael Palmeiro.

    All of which probably have the numbers, but I don't trust at all. Obviously Palmeiro was busted, but the other two I don't think were clean, but it'll never be proven.

  7. QUOTE (striker @ Jan 2, 2010 -> 06:01 PM)
    I bet they feel out Flowers in spring training and if he does well he could split time with DH/Pierzynski.

    It's possible, but they'll have to bring in a catcher or two for spring training, even if it's just non-roster invitees.

    I like the idea of Flowers playing everyday in Charlotte for at least a couple months. Get the ABs, work on his swing, and work on the defensive game.

  8. QUOTE (jphat007 @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 11:35 AM)
    If we go in with the offense we have right now, it is very likely that we won't be in it on July 31. It's a possibility of course, all these guys could have career years, but it isn't very likely. We have a very very bad offense right now.

    I don't think the offense is as bad as some think. Of course Quentin and Rios have to perform in order for the Sox offense to be effective, but I'm not going to worry about it. Quentin should be healthy going into the season, and Rios will come back to his career averages. That's my hope at least. And a full year of Beckham should be helpful. I see an All Star appearance for Gordon in 2010.

  9. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 11:17 AM)
    My major concern with Vlad is that he can't move anymore. If you think Kotsay's knees are bad, i'd bet anything that Vlads' are in shreds.

    Yeah, we don't want Vlad..or at least I don't. He's declining at an alarming rate. He can't play the field. He can't run. It would be worse than just signing Thome, and I don't want that either.

    I'm almost beginning to think the right thing to do is just stand pat and see what develops in the first half with Jones and Kotsay getting the AB's. Then make a move or two before July 31. Whatever move that needs to be--starting pitcher, bullpen, another hitter.

  10. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Dec 18, 2009 -> 12:52 PM)
    Mark I really thjink you are worrying to much. It's expereince versus youth. Hudson can learn this year and unless he gets traded as so many of our prospects do than he will most likely be starting in 2011. I really believe Garcia is good for 12-15 wins as the #5 starter

    12 would be a stretch. 15 would mean the Sox ran away with the division.
