And they underperformed that by 27 wins. 17 wins would have them in the mid-60's, which would almost call for a parade.

I think what Greg is saying is they might not actually score a run until sometime in May.

What if we only score 100 runs all year

Sure, but I'm still also scarred by how Gordon Beckham lost all confidence after being moved all over the diamond defensively while still also trying to figure out how to hit consistently as a big leaguer. Seemed like every move and adjustment was accompanied by two steps backward in his development.

I still feel like he’s a HOFer if we just left him at 3rd.  3rd is a swagger position and he was crushing it.  Nothing cool about 2nd base and totally neutered him beyond repair.

might be time to dust off the Beckham projections thread for laughs

  3. cheers to @WhiteSox2023 for using Soxcess in the other thread.  Never seen it before but it hits home for sure.

Thought it would be fun to really explore the depths of this word.  More than simply a word to all of us.

I mean where to begin.  So many layers.  It means so much.

Right away I’m getting some Kingpin vibes like with Munson being a verb, but way worse.  Never really having the world in the palm of your hand like Munson, but instead just always messing it up since forever and to confidently keep going on the suck path.  Soxcess

I'm not sure that is how the organization works.  A sycophant is someone who sucks up to the boss.  Seems like JR let KW and RH run the baseball stuff and was wildly, sadly loyal to them...that is like sycophant in reverse.  Who's to say if Getz has a $200 million budget that he doesn't believe that signing Soto for $70 mil per year isn't better than spending $70 mill on Grandal/Keuchel/Lynn and a bunch of relief pitchers.  WE don't know.  What we know is that the budget HAS been high.  That's JR.  And we know it was done poorly.

I’m not sure how the organization works either.  What we know is that they’ve had some high payrolls but they’ve also never signed a large contract for a top tier player.   Both are true.  It is what it is only until it isn’t.

  5. Really need to hit him where it hurts.  Need articles with tons of interviews confirming things like: “he’s not a sportsman”, “won’t be remembered as a sportsman”, “probably won’t be remembered as a sports team owner”, “has never had the respect of other owners or reporters”, “never had what it takes to have a competitive nature”, “not a man’s man”, didn’t have the cajones to compete with the big teams and build a preeminent franchise”, “just a middling man only able to sustain a middling franchise”

Just all kinds of cheapy, low blow ego attacks that make him seam sports adjacent instead of part of the sporting community.

Poetic that it was Velus Jones running the ball when it happened. As if he couldn't get any more hated by this fanbase.

For sure.  Reminds me of whoever blew up Dickman had no business even being on the field if I remember right.  Ended Dickman’s breakout momentum

Fletcher is a terrible hitter.  His swing is so weak.  Our scouts have no idea what a good hitter looks like.

I’ve still never watched him play but that’s super concerning.

I feel like KW mostly targeted good players with his sneaky deals.  They could find TCQ, Eaton.  They had their misses for sure too.

It’s early but Getz’ trades feel like they’re leaning miss overall.

And what happens when we have to pay those better players? They leave. My point is taking money from one area to fix the other just digs another hole.

I get your point but it seems like the one path to sustained success is the pipeline.  That’s it.  Having the best pipeline should be the investment

Again, I have no idea how to process what you are saying. I have no idea what Jason was going to do that everyone else has not, or what everyone listed has to do with it.

Nowhere did i write THAT.  Twisting words again.

I said he would have slowly noticed something was obviously quite wrong by his body language and run it up the chain.

Remember Montoyo had no memorable interaction with Robert. Abreu and Grandal are long gone.  Moncada might as well be on Mars at this point. Robert and Vargas both seem completely lost/isolated. That much is pretty clear.

This is almost Zach Greinke land.

Hahn Grifol and Getz all don’t seem like they are very hands on types like a Joe Maddon or Ron Washington and have their fingers on the pulse of the org.

The hitting coaches have never come close to reaching Bannister/Katz levels of credibility.

Clearly the guy was struggling and everyone just left him alone.  Benetti at least has a high enough EQ to notice that and bring it to the attention of the sports psychologist or someone like Mike Gellinger.

Heck, I worked in minor league baseball and spent one month with Jose Guillen driving him around everywhere and looking after him after a quite serious knife drawing incident incident in Bradenton…because I spoke Spanish.  My friend had to similarly babysit Sean Kemp with the Sonics, just basically keep him out of trouble.

At any rate, I would still give Benetti a better shot at fixing Robert than Hahn or Getz.

This is one of your best and should be worked into the Soxtalk constitution somewhere

I will be happy if they don’t settle for the first guy they picked who just happened to be a guy in the minors in his first full season doing anything like this.

Pedro Grifol clears that low bar!

I know what you mean but this is the White Sox.  They are likely going to make the least exciting hire you can possibly imagine.

So far through 3 games at least Grady appears to be interesting.  That’s huge!

    And cheap!

And inexperienced enough to not pass instantly at the offer like a real manager probably would.   Nice!

    Sadly it’s him or Jirschele

Hey man let’s just keep hiring the unqualified cheap guys.  Maybe there is something to it, as it has worked so well for us up til now

    Totally fair.

What are the chances we actually get a qualified expensive guy though?

  12. Is there a path where Grady is considered for manager beyond this season?

He’s in his 40s.  Learned to play from the old guard but isn’t the old guard.

If the players like him and play hard then all my boxes are checked.

I’m interested in Sox baseball again, just a tiny bit, so maybe there’s something to this.
