War in Ukraine

I wish the markets worked based on companies doing the right thing. Apple stock dropped on news it is stopping sales in Russia. Ford stock declined yesterday for the same reason.

Seriously anyone who shorts because of a company stopping business in Russia is a unpatriotic piece of shit. Hold those stocks or buy more.

It's going to be a huge test of ESG investing for the rest of world if Russia pushes oil to $150 gallon...as well as Germany with LNG.  That said, Putin would be cutting off his nose to spite his face if they stopped selling energy to the majority of the developed world.  And China won't volunteer to pay higher prices, one would hope.  Or India, for that matter.

At some point does Russia's military get fed up with all this and just start ignoring orders and withdraw?

Probably not. Just like ours wouldn't.

Or putin gets fed up and throws a nuke or bombs the chernobyl site. Hope that doesn't happen.

Right now the Doomsday Clock is set at 100 second until midnight. I'm guessing that will change quickly. It's been a long time since using nuclear weapons was a real and eminent danger.

Nuclear power plant hit....on fire.

Fortunately, not a direct missile hit, but still worrisome.  No increase in radiation levels, yet.

This particular plant houses 6/15 nuclear reactors in the entire country.

Zapor.............is the abbreviated named of the city.   Guess we could call it south east-central Ukraine, in terms of location....not too far from those two breakaway regions in the southeast of the country.

What next?

It was a firefight at the admin (office) building outside the plant, not an assault on the reactors themselves. This plant apparently provides 25% of Ukraine's electricity, so it makes sense to capture it from a strategic standpoint. If they want an annexed or puppeted Ukraine, they'll want these critical multi-billion dollar assets intact I'd imagine.

Why are they only oligarchs if they're Russian?

Because it's too cool of a word to waste on anyone else.

We tend to use the less negative plutocracy when talking about our friends because oligarchs has taken on an addition meaning of corruption.

Here we've become a gerontocracy over the years.

This is the major problem with this country.  Too many boomers thinking the old ways still work when it's time to move forward.

Hell!  Let's say the world!  Look at Putin... old cold war brain doing a stupid war that very few in his country support...

Yep. Millennials in college are at their peak. Anything after that and they are declining quickly. By sixty they will be idiots not fit to run the world.

And the cycle will repeat. Boomers thought the same thing about the previous generation.
