So the team that had the best closer in baseball, possibly knew he was living on borrowed time, goes out at the trade deadline and gets the second best closer as insurance. Brilliant if the second best wasn't a complete bust.

How Hahn keeps his job?

Anyone got that Charlie from Always Sunny in Philadelphia meme right about now?

What doesn't make sense? The pieces fit. I know we'd rather think the entire organization are idiots.

Why do you think the Sox knew Hendricks might be on borrowed time last year?  What evidence is there to suggest that?

Reading through the thread posters here saw signs last year. I imagine the team would have also.

Just saw Liam is hurt. Three weeks? Damn. Is baseball as a sport in trouble? Seems like the majority of Sox players are hurt or have been hurt this year. Is this a sport where pitchers just physically can't go? And hitters can't take the quick movements left, right, up and back?  Insanity regarding injuries in baseball.

For what it's worth, Andrew Miller had a flexor strain in 2015 and returned within a month.  And didn't have Tommy John Surgery.  Obviously that's ideal but it might be the best one to one comparison in terms of career and usage.  Ptatc knows more than any of us but it might not be as bleak as we think it is.

The thing about Major league baseball, as in life, no one is irreplaceable.  If Joe Kelly can remain healthy, he can fill in as Closer. He might even thrive in that role for us.

Hendricks was lit up a few times by hitters who geared up for his fastball.  He countered by mixing in more sliders and it proved to be a good strategy.

However, I wonder if his slider put more strain on his forearm than his fastball. even though they both look like maximum effort pitches.

Anyway, I wish him the best.

If the Sox knew that they would have kept Kimbrel and traded Hendricks in the off-season.

What a crock of shit.

Pick an industry, sport, or field, and this is 100% verifiably FALSE.

You're an insufferable assclown.

Sometimes you take away one of the most important players on the team and it can actually have a positive effect as others rally and pick up the slack, like the GS Warriors growing and maturing their roster while Klay Thompson was out…

Graveman gets to go back to closing again, for example.  Kelly moves to the 8th and other relievers (Lopez, Foster, Ruiz) have to cover the 7th.

That said, him missing the rest of 2022 and at least half of 2023 would be a disaster of epic proportions.

Did a bit more digging.  Only 20% of flexor strains result in Tommy John surgery according to statistics I read via the magic of Google.  Tanner Houck also got shut down with a right flexor strain earlier this year and he's doing ok.

Was that at the time of initial incident or long term down the road?

It says within a year.  Haven't found longterm statistics.  Average IL visit is 117 days but that is taking into account the pitchers who had Tommy John.

Good article. A year out makes sense for a correlation to the forearm strain.

Biggest reliever contract in history to a guy with a UCL tear. Lol

Maybe they were counting on not having to pay it all and let insurance cover it.
