5th in AL in fWAR. (*Perez 6th, Manoah 8th, Valdez 9th, Cortes 13th, *Blackburn 20th)

4th in AL in ERA (Valdez 6th, *Perez 7th, Cortes 8th, *Blackburn 14th)

4th in AL in FIP (*Perez 5th, Verlander 7th, Valdez 9th, Manoah 10th, Cole 14th, Cortes 15th, *Blackburn 17th)

* Texas and Oakland had to have an all-star and these guys were those teams' best choices. Still doesn't justify Valdez or Cortes when Cease beats them both in all three.

Dylan Cease should be in, but Kevin Gausman has been better, Shane Bieber his equal, but both were shunned by their 6-6 and 3-5 records,

Martin Perez & Paul Blackburn are "team participation" trophy selection. Win Loss record (emphasis on least losses) still plays a big role for the dinosaurs deciding this bullshit. It's why Tony La Russa places more emphasis on individual wins and saves than White Sox wins.

Top 20 AL fWAR Qualified (Innings) Starting Pitchers (Bold = All Star)

  1. 3.7 Kevin Gausman (6-6)
  2. 2.9 Shane McClanahan (9-3)
  3. 2.6 Justin Verlander (11-3)
  4. 2.5 Shane Bieber (3-5)
  5. 2.4 Dylan Cease (7-4)
  6. 2.4 Martin Perez (7-2)
  7. 2.2 Tank Skubal (6-7)
  8. 2.1 Alek Manoah (9-4)
  9. 2.1 Framber Valdez (8-4)
  10. 1.9 Frankie Montas (3-9)
  11. 1.9 Nick Pivetta (8-6)
  12. 1.9 Jameson Taillon (9-2)
  13. 1.7 Nestor Cortes (7-3)
  14. 1.7 Logan Gilbert (10-3)
  15. 1.6 Jordan Lyles (5-7)
  16. 1.6 Gerrit Cole (8-2)
  17. 1.4 Jon Gray (5-4)
  18. 1.4 Robbie Ray (7-6)
  19. 1.3 Jordan Montgomery (3-2)
  20. 1.3 Paul Blackburn (6-4)

Saw this on my Twitter feed too. Carlos is a clearly a good teammate.

I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea, but a bunch of Sox players streamed on twitch during the pandemic. Carlos was one of them & he came across as such a nice guy. I'll always be a fan of his for life because of that.

I have no problem with Blackburn making the team because A’s and I don’t mind the every team represents thing.

Nestor? Nice enough story, but come the fuck on.

Yankees should have gotten 1 of Nestor/Cole. Not both.

A's needed a rep, so Blackburn totally fits.  Nestor though over Cease, nah.

Five of the eight All Star Starting Pitchers were selected by the Player's Ballot, with two of the remaining three chosen by the Commissioner's office to ensure each team is represented. Only one SP among the eight was discretionary.

All Star Rosters - 33 Players per League

  • Fans (9): Starting Position Players
  • Players (17): Eight Pitchers (5 SPs & 3 RPs) and 9 Starting Position Backups
  • Commissioner's Office (6): Four Pitchers & Two Position Players - Picks include necessary selections to ensure each team is represented.
  • Rob Manfred (1): Special Selection Player based on distinguished careers.

.... for now. Pitchers will drop out and he'll be in as a replacement.

Agree that he should've been in originally, but it'll work itself out.

Just came here to say this exact thing. Someone will drop out or get hurt between now and then.

I doubt it, since he is scheduled to pitch tomorrow and Sunday. The Sox are not in a position to let him skip his Sunday start to allow him to pitch an inning or two in the ASG.
