I've never understood why Chicago is known for their hot dogs without ketchup and deep dish pizza when the Italian Beef is a much better local product.

as someone who hasnt lived in illinois in the last 17 years, Chicago hotdogs hit different. I always make it a point to grab some hot dogs when i come up.

I prefer a polish with grilled onions and mustard is also an acceptable answer.

My go to at the stadium is actually the italian done up with grilled onions and mustard, I feel like they're less popular and stay on the griddle a little longer and get more char,  Love the polish as well.

Bourdain had this exact opinion on one of his Chicago visits on "The Layover."

Love a good char at the ballpark.  I have not tried the Italian at the park but will give it a try next time, thanks.

The Italian Beef and Sausage combo is a particularly wonderful sandwich.

Ketchup on a hot dog just reminds me of being a kid.  That's the only way I'd eat them.  Now, it's mustard and onions.  I've had a true Chicago dog a few times, and it's okay.  To me, it's too much.

Now I kind of want a hot dog.

Where do you stand on places that put fries on the hot dog??

When I hit age 12 or 13 my old man actually pulled me aside and said something to the effect of "you're too old to put ketchup on Hot Dogs."  Tried mustard only and remember thinking "oh damn, he's right this is better."

Speaking of condiments, my wife prefers a combination of mustard and ketchup when she has fries.  Anyone else?

The ketchup/mustard mix is my favorite dip for potato chips.
Also, ketchup is the only must-have condiment for my hot dogs, and sport peppers are trash.

Interesting but it makes sense if the mix works for fries, it would work for another potato product.  I too hate sports peppers but will get a Chicago dog with everything but the peppers.  When it comes down to it though, it is probably the quality of the dog.  I still mourn the loss of Best Kosher brand.

What I've eaten at the park this year:

Hot dog - always with mustard and grilled onions. never ketchup

Buona Beef - hot and sweet peppers

Loaded nachos with beef

Regular Nachos w/ cheese and jalapeno

Rainbow cone

Helmet Sundae

I usually never stray from the above. What am I missing out on?

Big fan of the brats at the ballgame.  That is what I almost always get there
