So is Gavin Sheets for real?

Regressing. 36 next year. Bad team. It’s time to move on.

If Jose Abreu regressing is a .300 average, 20 HRs and 80-90 rbis that is still the best on the team. You have to keep him for another year. Jose is rarely injured and a good clubhouse guy. Sheets is the one guy who is really improving. It is obvious he knew he had to learn to go the opposite way and he right now is one of our most complete hitters. If he keeps  it up the rest of the year I think you have to get him at bats against LHP to see what he can do. Maybe he becomes a good trade chip but right now he is possibly our best hitter and he is not injury prone. He is learning the OF, maybe he can get better in RF.

This all goes back to poor drafting and putting the team together with so many of the same type of guys. Eloy, Vaughn, Sheets, Burger, Abreu are all DH/1B types. Get rid of Moncada would be my advice.

He'll probably be a solid major league hitter.  Of course if you read a lot of the bloggers, he should rarely play.

As for the logjam, Vaughn is probably the only one whose real value can be ascertained, and, thus, could reliably be traded.  They need to let Abreu walk.

Not attacking you just making a point. I can't believe how many people still hate on Abreu. Why the heck would you let the best player on the team, the one guy who cares, walk? This team of underachieving stiffs (in a baseball sense) has so many guys who need to be kicked out the door. Abreu is not one of them. Right now you definitely get rid of Grandal, Moncada, Harrison, Pollock, Andrus and most of the pitchers. Get rid of them and then we can talk. Play Abreu at first; split DH time between Sheets and Vaughn. Let Eloy play left (stress to him it'd be nice if he goes to Arizona and works on his fielding with college teams out there this winter), Robert center, and find a good fielding rightfielder somewhere.

It's not about hating Abreu. This team has too many 1B/DH types and Abreu is just the guy whose contract is up. They need to allocate that payroll elsewhere. It will be sad to see him go, but it needs to happen.

Abreu will also be 36 next year and it's better to move on too early than too late.

If you still believe in Vaughn, it's his time at 1B now.

Winning organizations don't think that way IMO. Pay the guy some significant $$. He's earned it.  ... Maybe he'll want to sign elsewhere after such a disappointing season (not for him but the team). I'm sure a contender will find room for him at 1B if they are smart.

Agree to disagree. I worship Abreu in a baseball sense and want him to stay.

I do too but baseball can be a hard business. The problem with the Sox is they have the potential for a lot of serious dead money contracts next year and I think it’s obvious they have to get better.

I just don’t see how you give up control on either Eloy (at 25) or Andrew (at 24) given the contract situation. If I felt JR was going to turn on the money machine this off-season, then maybe you keep Abreu.

Gavin has proven himself to be a MLB player but not yet a starter.

Of course, if you let Jose walk, you leave it to chance that he winds up in Cleveland or Minnesota and come kick our ass.

Would you really run the risk of watching him turn into 2017-2022 Miguel Cabrera? It's typically better to get rid of a player a year early than hang onto them forever. This is the same organization that let Frank Thomas and Mark Buehrle walk.

If the park is going to benefit lefties, they have to make room for Sheets, not as an outfielder.  It also bodes well for Colas and possibly Mieses.  They cannot go into next year with Abreu, Eloy, Vaughn, and Sheets on the team.  Eloy is the guy I would keep. Either let Abreu walk, trade Vaughn or both.

Please stop

Against RHP, absolutely.

Sheets and Burger can be a great platoon at 1B.

Trade Vaughn, let Abreu walk. Sheets and Burger platoon at 1B.

Sign Brandon Nimmo, call up Colas.

Hope for health and a rebound from Eloy/Yaz/Moncada.

We have the lineal and when healthy they will produce

He’s been mediocre to downright bad except this month of August really…which is being fueled by a .400+ BABIP. Not going to get carried away by a hot streak, we all should have learned that lesson by now.

Not sure if the glove justifies it, but I think if Gavin can stick as a lefty pinch hitter off the bench it would be a success.

Smart teams don't keep the 20-million-dollar aging player while trading the cheap young stud.  I like that JR is loyal to his people but the Konerko farewell tour was not enjoyable.  I hope the WS hire a talent evaluator GM and RH can serve as a contract specialist or leave.  Williams is long past his prime and should retire as he has wanted to do for years.

If the team gets a legitimate lefthanded hitting RFer who can play defense, I'm OK with keeping Vaughn and Abreu as 1B / DH.

Robert in CF with a legit RFer can help make up for Eloy's defensive deficiencies in LF.

Oh yeah - and Sheets is a LH bench bat or trade piece.

Actually, that’s exactly how winning organizations think.  Keep cost-controlled young players.  Let the aging, expensive players walk earlier rather than later.

Sheets should be relied on as nothing more than a depth piece. He’s interesting but if Sox plug him in as the primary DH or a primary corner OF, they’re going to be bad again.

The path forward should be simple:

-Let Jose walk

-Sign Nimmo

-Call up Colas in May to take the other corner, shifting Pollock to 4th OF

-Shift AV to 1B mostly fulltime

-shift Eloy to DH mostly fulltime

-Sheets can fill in for rest and injuries

Team defense, lineup balance and athleticism take giant leaps forward. And we didn’t even spend much money. I can’t imagine Nimmo will be much more than 3-4 year deal around $15-17M AAV.

Here we are.

I don't see it that way. If the platoon is more efficient, then why not?

The Dodgers have success because of players like Muncy, Taylor, and Bellinger that they can move all over the diamond, and we're saying we should take up two roster spots to cover 1B. That's great.
