White Sox Mgr Speculation Thread

I'm not so concerned with the age of the next manager.  If they hire a guy who will use analytics, be able to relate to the players while holding them accountable, and manage a lineup and bullpen effectively, I don't care how old they are.

Some of the more intriguing names are Beltran, Espada, Quatraro, Bochy, Alomar.

Just, let's stop talking about Ozzie and AJ.  Neither would be a good fit.

say no to Ozzie

If there were ever a time for Ozzie to come back to manage the Sox, it's now.  I've always been against the suggestion in the past and don't believe he'd be a good choice in the future, either.  But right now, with a heavily Hispanic team, a guy who is actually "fung", believes in accountability, and knows this team like the back of his hand, I wouldn't hate it.

This is speaking strictly to the personnel side of the equation.  He is certainly not an analytics guy and isn't some strategic mastermind.  But he would make this team better.

If the Sox just said nothing about TLR, it would be better, because Lord knows they aren't going to admit hiring him ruined the rebuild.

The organization ruined the rebuild before it even started.TLR was just the crappy manager when it fell apart due to the way JR runs the team. JR has made a lot of bad decisions over 40 years to keep the Sox playing at the mediocre level.

Sometimes things go well for a while but that's just due to  some people in the organization doing some hings right every so often. But their overall quality of work is poor. And when JR sticks his nose in for personal, moral or mostly bottom line reasons ( which is often and effects many years ) this is what you get.

Be grateful the TLR fiasco only lasted a couple of years. You've been smelling Reinsdorf's odor forever  and it's as bad as the stockyards.

Would love to see Rafa give it a go with the White Sox if they can't get Joe Espada.

2005, the White Sox weren't the only incredible story that year.

This team is straddled with the players currently on the roster and I don't expect any significant moves.  Maybe they see the light and come to a conclusion that putting two 1B/DH in the corner outfield positions is not a good idea and they look for an actual outfielder.   But, do you really trust Hahn or KW or whomever is making the decisions with making roster moves that can actually improve this team?

No, I expect Hahn will trade for the same type of players he always does and with the payroll and roster he has his wiggle room is slim at best and I just don't think he is creative enough to do that.

I'll go a step further.

We need a guy who'll look at a player (eye test), look at the analytics (numbers test), and work with coaches to figure out what's going on with the guy's swing, mechanics, approach, scouting reports, etc., then work to fix the guy.

You left out health. Health is always the #2 factor in poor performance only behind talent which is really to hard to quantify. They all have talent but being consistently good at baseball takes a special mind that scouts or anyone else can't figure out. There are few that just are physically gifted with eyesight connected to split second decision making, connected to physical prowess surrounded by analytical adjustments.

The rest who become good based on consistently using their mind and body to overcome the many failures that are inherently built into baseball.

A lot of talented players sooner or later get to a level where it becomes overwhelming physically and mentally playing among the best in the world.

That too, though I'd generally lump that in with the "eye test."

I wouldn't . That's why you have a medical staff so layman coaches don't have to determine if you are healthy.

Humans are not experts at reading other people. We may think body language says a lot but it's just another way to think we know something just by looking at it when we don't. We aren't even good at knowing other people we have known all our lives. People hide so much.

It's like all of us thinking Moncada doesn't care based on his movements  or expressions or emotions he shows. We don't.

Who are the most likely candidates? Miguel Cairo (obviously current interim manager), Willie Harris (managed in the Sox minors and a coach the past 3 years with Cubs), Bruce Bochy, Sandy Alomar Jr, Carlos Beltran? Add Joe Espada, Joe Maddon, AJ Hinch to the list?

Edit: say no to Ozzie and AJ (but they would still be better than the current iteration of TLR)

For every name you can come up with that you're familiar with, there should be a name interviewed that we don't know. I have no idea who the pitching coach is for the Nationals, the bench coach for the Padres, the 3b coach for the Mariners, or the AAA coach for the Dodgers are. I could Google them, but I won't remember their names in an hour so why bother? But that doesn't mean there aren't really good people working their way up through those positions, people who would be an excellent fit for this job if given the chance.

Yes I'm fine with Beltran being punished, I think it's silly the rest weren't. And I think people mad the rest weren't kind of want Beltran to be extra super punished just to re-enforce how bad it was.

If anything the episode makes John Coppolella's ban for life just so insane to me. Granted he was likely caught red handed in a way Luhnow wasn't, but it seems excessive given some of the extremely gross cheating things that have happened recently to ban for life a practice that was you know, bad but also...not that out of operating procedure for quite a few teams.

John Coppolella cost other owners players (depreciable assets) and money. It's the lone thing they care about in the sport (piece of metal? please).

If owners cared about integrity on the field, they would have done something about steroids, stop switching baseballs in and in between seasons since they purchased the baseball manufacturer, wouldn't have cancelled the 1994 and most of 2020 season, and wouldn't have gone to a twelve team money grab playoff effective this season. Would have also switched to the DH in the NL long before 2022.

Pete Rose banned for life and now all thirty teams are working toward "licensing" sportsbooks, all thirty teams strongly advertising gambling for at least a decade.

Does Walt Weiss deserve a 2nd look as a manager? Obviously didn’t go well in Colorado, but that’s a tough gig for anyone. Seems to be doing very good things with the Braves hitters.

And if we are going to pluck a guy from the Astros…Alex Cintron? Has some White Sox ties JR will love, but has been around that successful Houston club for a few years now as a hitting coach.

Basically I want a hitting coach to turn this lineup back around that has been with a successful club for a few years to learn what winning is actually like. Because no one around the White Sox org knows. Shouldn’t be that hard

Wasn't he quite a legendary a**hole when he played for the White Sox?

I guess it's more of an "I lump the training staff as an extension of the coaching staff's resources."

If players are hurt, the medical staff / training staff need to notify the rest of the coaches so that they can make appropriate decisions.

Tomato / tomato. I basically agree 100% with your post.

Here is my big hope.  That Rick Hahn and Kenny Williams, by publicly shutting their mouths during the TLR nightmare, have gained the trust of JR to say look we did it your way, now let us do it our way.  I mean if they hadn't, there is a much higher reality of Tony just placing his handplaced successor in place now in Miguel Cairo, then the list of guys that Nigtengale is already leaking.

I might be 100% wrong here, but I can hope.

I listened to the CHGO podcast they put out last night on TLR.  I've started listening to that lately and its pretty solid.  Duber is always interesting to listen to as he is fairly articulate, and is also in the clubhouse and has a better feel for those things than those without that exposure.  I was surprised - though maybe I shouldn't be - to hear his take that he does think this is legitimately Tony stepping away for his health, and not something the Sox were encouraging.  IE: the Sox may not have gone in a different direction had this heart issue not popped up.  We'll likely never know one way or the other, but fuckina, if the Sox were actually going to let TLR come back if his doctors cleared him its just so frustrating.

I don't think that's surprising at all.

I had no doubt an act of God was the only possibility Tony or Jerry would be gone before October 2023.

If Tony had no health issues, Kenny and Rick would have no say as to whether Tony could be replaced. Tony wouldn't want to end his career this way, and would want to redeem himself in 2023.

The year end press conference would be to blame health, perhaps a few coaches or staff would be relieved of their roles. Hahn would promise player changes and a commitment to continuing to look to improve the club under this multi-championship window, and promise to work with Tony to find ways to improve the club during this offseason.

So Hahn is the one leaking this news clearly. So annoying.

He probably is because he is still pissed he was stuck with the drunk demented two time DUI manager.

Having said that, this is another in a long list of reasons, Hahn needs to be fired and he cannot be responsible for the next Sox manager.
