Outside of '85, Ditka's teams entered the playoffs without their first string and some years without their first and second string quarterbacks healthy.  That's a big deal in football.

5 first place Division Titles in a row and 6 Division Titles in 11 years say he was a pretty good coach and had a much better run than Ozzie.

Football is a bit different. How did he do in New Orleans? Also remember Doug Flutie was on him. Chris Zorich was on him. He lost his focus and like Ozzie was all about himself and making a buck. I think there are more than a couple of guys who could have coached the 1985 Bears to a Super Bowl. Here's something more impressive, Lovie Smith coached a team QBd by Rex Grossman to a Super Bowl.

This isn't the NFL, you don't have sham interviews with people who aren't actual candidates for your top coaching position.

Some dork on a message board isn't the end all be all for information. Just because he doesn't think he will get the job doesn't make it any less concerning they went out of their way to say Ozzie isn't in consideration only to then interview him for said position. Its worrisome.

MLB does have a minority interview rule, so there are some for sure.

You nailed it. What Ozzie and Ditka have in common is that they're not afraid to kick some ass. And that is very endearing to fans.

No, they give the impression that they're not afraid to kick ass by talking a big game when it doesn't affect them.

LOL the Chicago White Sox did exactly that with Willie Harris in 2020. To the letter. To the point where Willie probably could have filed the same lawsuit that Flores did, if he was willing to burn bridges because of it.

grabbed some popcorn. cant wait for everybody to critique mendoza when they didn't even know he was a human being that existed up until an hour ago.

my opinion is we should do another 87 pages on this thread about the manager because we know so much about their interviews, what they said in them, how they would approach certain players, etc. etc. We know so much, so shouldn't be hard to fill another 87 pages with well thought out posts on the positives and negatives.

:)

We fell in love with Espada because he is a Latino that interviewed a bunch of times. Unless we knew more than that. Seemed like it. What we knew Im not sure however when pressed.

The fact that we learned Willie interviewed after the fact was all we needed to know about it.

I've been called a lot of things but dork might be a first.

Uncertain why this made me laugh so hard.

I think it's being tired from the unnecessary drama of this unnecessarily prolonged manager decision (other and arguably better organizations make these kinds of decisions quicker and with far less drama).

Or it might be the hard-earned knowledge gained by slogging through the entirety of Melville's Moby Dick and learning that "dork" technically means "whale peni$" (rather than being a late 20th century synonym for nerd or doofus).

Wear that dork label with pride!

"bench coach for team in 3 of the last 5 world series" seems like it is good enough for people now SMDH

Is this who you hinted at the other day?

Why does that matter ? The closest anyone got to mentioning an out of the blue candidate was @Dick Allen who just said it because as fans we don't know jack. How convenient to be cryptic (except about Getz) then claim you knew about a guy earlier but didn't mention him .

There's a whole bunch of details out about Espada if you're interested. He's been a successful coach in a successful organization, worked under both Baker and Hinch. Here's an article from a couple weeks ago on his managerial future, if it's paywalled for you and you want to read it let me know via pm as I have access to that one. Jeremy Pena is a guy who has gotten a lot of work from him.

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/texas-sports-nation/astros/article/Houston-Astros-Joe-Espada-manager-future-17492900.php

Quote

Espada’s influence on Houston’s infielders is immeasurable. After Jose Altuve melted down defensively during the 2020 American League Championship Series, Espada spent the winter scrutinizing his throws from second base and made changes that have had noticeable impact. Correa credited Espada with improving his first step at shortstop en route to securing last season’s Gold Glove.

“It’s definitely really important that he’s one of the constants here,” fellow Gold Glover Yuli Gurriel said through an interpreter. “It’s to the point where he knows us, he knows what things we need to improve, but we also know him, so we know the way he works and what things we can expect from him as well.”

Remember how last year in the playoffs the Astros seemed to have a guy right where every ground ball went off a White Sox bat, and every ball the Astros hit found a hole? That was Espada.

Quote

Espada sits to Baker’s right during every game inside Minute Maid Park, positions the infielders, handles calls for replay reviews and aids the manager with whatever he might need. Bregman lauded Espada’s ability to prepare bench players for late-game situations that might unfold.

Bregman said Espada is “always thinking one step ahead.”

The fruits of Espada’s labor can go unnoticed to the public. Players like Peña are indebted to it. He’s morphed from that anonymous prospect in Port St. Lucie to Houston’s starting shortstop and begins each workday the same way.

I don't remember seeing Carlos Mendoza listed before.  Is that new information?

Haha, never mind.  I should pay better attention to the updated thread titles.  Carry-on.

After having the worst possible mismatch of a manager to the type of players and squad he had, it is weird that someone would be upset that we are interviewing people who better fits the type of players we have on this team.  It is really easy to not understand what it is like being in a completely different world with a different culture and language than what you are used to if you have never done it before.  At the end of the day, having someone who can between the lines and understand things better for a large portion of this team isn't a bad thing.

If upset means he was who I was hoping they would hire, then yeah, upset. The whole thing that is bordering on absurd levels is the idea that Latin players need a latin manager so much that it determines ultimate outcomes the field. That’s what is being implied with the whole situation. Reminds me of how NBA players supposedly play better for black head coaches

Criticizing/arguing is a lot more different than blocking.

Looking to get offended isn't a virtue.  There is nothing wrong with not wanting your own entertainment to be ruined by people, and taking an action to prevent exactly that.

So far, not so much for the decision makers in the rooms with him

your quote was that sox fans are just lemmings who were excited he could speak spanish. Not that he may not be as advertised because he hasn't been promoted yet.

Not hard to look at Espada's wiki for more than 2 seconds and understand why fans put him A1.

Yet, the White Sox weren't the only team that passed. He puts people in defensive position....because he reads the report which tells them where to play.

The adverb I would use is thirsty. Not that I necessarily blame anyone for being thirsty at this point.
