I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss Oakland’s return. I just can’t believe of all the possible trade partners and packages they settled on one that, at face value, doesn’t appear to been very appealing.

If the White Sox had a similar return for Anderson, by all means I would have said it was robbery. Oakland atleast deserves more credit for identifying talent, even if the fans and media are suggesting otherwise

Oakland's return isn't that light. Way way too early to judge this trade. Too many people around here seem fixated on prospect rankings and treat them like gospel. Muller and Salinas are two dudes with live arms with massive upside.

If Oakland is piling up guys they like but who aren't ranked highly, the fact that they aren't ranked highly should mean that they can add on extra wild cards in a deal like this. Didn't the Gallo-to-the-Yankees deal include like 6 players going back to Texas?

Rosenthal is also reporting Houston is still in on Brantley and Conforto and may sign TWO outfielders.

No wonder Pito signed  with the Astros. It's  got to be such a refreshing  change to play for an organization that prioritizes their fan commitment to putting a quality product on the field.

CWS has the clearest path to perinneal post-season play than any other MLB major market franchise.

Unfortunately that gift was tragically wasted on the Reinsdorf Group.

This should be a great selling point to potential oligarchs interested in buying CWS.

It’s very clear that the A’s have a vastly different valuation on Ruiz than how the prospect sites view him currently.  Sounds like he made significant strides with his plate discipline last year and when combined with athleticism/ speed makes him a very interesting prospect.  Still seems very light for a young catcher with tons of control like Contreras, even if you think he has to move to DH eventually.

That Hader trade may have derailed the Brewers last year, but it got them William Contreras.

Basically its a bunch of people going by what they see in rankings without any special knowledge of a teams system, a players developmental path.

A lot of guys missed 2020 lost a year of development. If they came back strong from that instead of all rusty and bad those prospects should be given a lot of credit for how they took advantage of the missed year and also how the parent teams may also have given the guidance necessary  for the prospect to follow.

How did Sox prospects do in 2021.  The Sox minors may be bad but seems like some of the top guys did well coming back from the missed year. Maybe not some of the pitchers though.

Missing 2020 kind of screwed up rankings. It affected some guys more than others, mostly the college kids when a lost year can mean more since they are already older. A missed year for a 19 yr old may not mean as much to their ranking if they were ranked high to start. But if a 22 year old misses a year when he's still in A ball that's a long road ahead .

One thing you have to consider is that the park in oakland is quite pitcher friendly so pitchers can work there who wouldn't work as well elsewhere.

So they probably hope some of the pitchers do well for a couple years there and then can be traded at an inflated price.

Oakland is essentially tampa bay minus the player development - owner doesn't like to spend on coaching and training facilities which why oakland doesn't trade for A ball guys but either for young mlb players or AAA players who are half a year away, then they are playing them for 2-3 years and trade them for new prospects.

The rays do the same but their approach works a little better since due to their big player dev system they are able to take on younger, more raw and higher upside prospects while oakland with their budget player dev staff needs to get higher floor, older and more polished players which means the upside (and risk) is lower.

Still the approach has worked reasonably well with 6. 500+ seasons, 3 90+ win seasons and 5 playoff appearances in the last 10 seasons but there are limits to that approach of course because it is hard to generate stars that way and a bunch of 2-3 win players is not stacking up favorably in the playoffs.

But it could be a lot worse considering their low payroll, they could have been a team like seattle or Pittsburgh with 2 playoff appearances in the last 20 years.
