I think he’s supposed to be back shortly after the break but not totally sure. Rangers AA team is 15 mins from my house so seen a bit of him and the Roughriders. Would be a fun prospect as a return but not sure Rangers would part with him for Lynn.

That bartolo's colonoscopy guy said he heard if we eat some of Lynn's money, Roby could be part of the return.

Dude has what like 8-9m left for this year, so maybe eat 3m to get Roby? Still get to shave 6m off payroll.

By just looking at stats, Roby looks like a 'must-miss'

His BABIP is inflated and his FIP is fine so the ERA doesn't bother me. He's also like 3 years younger than his level.

Also, it's more than a warm-body for 2023 Lance Lynn.

Seriously, Lynn was DFA material a few weeks ago getting anything of remote value for him would be amazing.

He's been pretty good for the past month or so. Hopefully he continues pitching well here until he is traded.

Hahn will turn any trade in a three way where we ship off the prospect, and get a 2023 version of James Shields. He will claim we’re extending our window and not giving up on 2023.

Man, I forgot all of the foodies and other jabroni accounts existed. That was a fun last nine months - back to reality.

A guy with a 5 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in AA doesn't really strike me as a guy the Sox would need to eat $ to acquire.

That's what I am saying.  If we don't need to throw in cash.. sure.. but to eat some for him? Eh.

I feel like the guy was trying to sound realistic, looked up the mlb pipeline rankings (which aren't yet updated), didn't want to go top ten prospect so went number 11.

If Lance keeps pitching like he has, that 2024 option starts to look a lot more intriguing, even just as an option.  I wouldn't just give him away, and I am sure the Sox won't either considering their current SP depth, and the fact that this FO almost certainly will "attempt" to keep this team in contention in 2024.

Longenhagen at Fangraphs has Roby with a 50 FV grade and inside their top 100 fwiw

Quote

Roby would be stuffed even higher on the Top 100 if not for his current shoulder injury, which shelved him in early June. Before he was shut down, Roby was consistently working with four plus pitches. He was sitting 94-95 with riding life, bending in one of the nastier curveballs in the minors, tilting in a similarly shaped slider in the mid-80s, and turning over a tailing low-80s changeup. He looked like a contender’s four-pitch mid-rotation starter, like a less physical Hunter Brown. Roby’s delivery does have some violence, but he’s always thrown strikes anyway. He is slightly undersized at a well-made 6-foot-1 and he has now had arm injuries in two of his three pro seasons. From a stuff and pitch execution standpoint, Roby was where it was expected Jack Leiter would be when Leiter was drafted. He looked like a slam dunk impact starter and one of Texas’ better deadline trade chips before the injury. The 2024 season is his 40-man evaluation year, so unless he comes back this year and kicks the door down, we’re more likely looking at a 2025 debut.

If we can find a way to clear like Grandal and one of the overpaid relievers off the books even for nothing in return, hopefully JR will allow FO to eat some money on Lynn, Giolito, Anderson to get real return.

A 50 FV SP prospect would be a really solid return for Lynn.

Roby's peripherals are quite strong and he's also a 21 year old pitching in AA. Just from a data perspective, he looks very similar to Mena.

If the idea is to try to contend next year, that would require the Sox to significantly improve and the Guardians, Twins and Tigers to not improve. Howling at the moon stuff, if you ask me.
But if so, they may look to do something  like trade Giolito for Glyber.  That's just kicking the can down the road, with a weaker trade chit for next season.  Better off regrouping for '25, when the books are a lot cleaner and some of these minor league pitchers should be ready to go.

We shouldn't need to wait long for a Lynn deal. Get rid of him before he turns into a bloated Keuchel. Lynn is OK but he's another five inning wonder who is a bit out of shape it appears.
