Astros eyeing Cease, Giolito...

Recommended Posts

According to Heyman:

According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, the Astros’ “dream acquisition” is White Sox right-hander Dylan Cease, though it’s unclear if the 27-year-old will be part of Chicago’s sale. Heyman previously reported that Cease, who is controllable through 2025, is one of the players the White Sox are looking to retain and build around.

It’s possible, then, that the Astros could pivot to another White Sox starter, Lucas Giolito, who is an impending free agent. Per Heyman, Giolito is one of the alternatives Houston is considering, along with Cubs right-hander Marcus Stroman (opt-out), Cardinals left-hander Jordan Montgomery (impending free agent) and Tigers lefty Eduardo Rodriguez (opt-out).

Yikes, their prospects are weak.  They'd have to empty the farm or deal from the ML roster.  I don't even think I could put together a reasonable package for either Cease or Giolito.

We can talk to them about Clevinger and Lynn and relievers but def not a fit for Giolito or Cease.

Yes, one of those two could be moved to Houston since they wouldn't get much back outside of payroll relief.

“I don’t think you’re going to find a top-of-the-rotation guy at this time of year — unless you’re going to mortgage the farm,” Brown said. “It’s probably going to be for a rental.”

Brown has said the Astros would balk at dealing top prospects, specifically outfielder Drew Gilbert, for a player on an expiring contract. Houston’s minor league system is generally ranked in the bottom half of baseball, and Brown, a longtime amateur scout who just completed his first draft as GM, has discussed the importance of restocking the system for the organization’s long-term health.

FWIW.

They do have some depth in both outfielders and potentially at their catcher's spot. There's a potential match for Giolito here, they'd actually have to pay a good amount for him, but I don't see them having enough to catch my interest for Cease.

This is why I'm ok with this report - more competition means more/better pieces. If they really want him, they're going to have to outbid others and really go after him.

This can only help us (I hope).

The White Sox really liked Drew Gilbert and Ryan Clifford from last year's draft. Also, Dana Brown didn't draft either guy.

Jimmy, what's going on on the trade front?

Anything close?

LOL

Hunter Brown, Yainer Diaz, Gilbert, Clifford, Pena - Done

If Cease + Robert were even on the table, I'd be talking to Baltimore. They have like 10 guys in AAA ready to go and not enough spots for them all.

If they were even available (doubt they are), I wouldn't package them. Definitely talk to the O's and Reds, teams with a surplus of young talent and unlikely to sign star type players.

They're a terrible fit for a trade.

System is weak overall and heavy on outfielders.

The weak part I get, but we can't be picky when it comes to positions. Just get some talent.

The problem is their top 4 prospects are all OFers, we desperately need pitching

I'd easily reject that offer if Robert is available.  0 bluechippers there and you'd need AT LEAST 1 to just trade robert alone.
