caulfield12
Was actually expecting a loss of an additional 15-20% in attendance coming off a 121 loss, history-breaking season...so this is a pleasant surprise so far for JR & Sons. Cleveland is the very last team in the major leagues to open up, coming tmrw afternoon at 3 p.m. against the White Sox. Right now, it's quite obvious that Detroit probably has the most enthusiasm/"momentum" from their fanbase coming off a tremendously successful (and unexpected post-season) as they finished off the home stretch of games at something like 20 games over the .500 mark. 14. DETROIT 30,604 per game 24. MINNESOTA 22,501 per game and off to a 3-7 mark, which they could ill afford after last season's disappointing 4th place finish 25. KANSAS CITY 20,750 per game, and must be a pretty big kick in the face for ownership after how well they did in the post-season last year 26. WHITE SOX 17,383 per game...ahead of Miami, the Athletics (limited by the size of the Sacramento AAA stadium, they're basically sold out this year in terms of season tickets), and TB (also limited by stadium size at Steinbrenner Field to 11,000+). Soon to be 27th after Cleveland opens the gates... First six home games last year for White Sox, 116,492 compared to 104,301 this year. Detroit, Atlanta and Cincy compared to Anaheim and Minnesota for those opponents (hard not to argue last season's early schedule was slightly more "compellling"). Of course, the MAJOR difference/s between the two seasons is Grifol vs. Venable as manager and coming off 61-101 versus 41-121. Perhaps the general excitement over Justin Ishbia taking over the team in the future has fueled some additional fan enthusiasm/dare one say hopefulness? Cue obligatory comments about Caulfield starting an attendance thread when he lives...the shortest distance (as the crow flies) between Wuhan, China and Chicago is approximately 7,066.87 miles away. (Give me a slight break, the 104% tariff is coming in just over 9 hours from now, lol...)
Chimpton
I think Opening Day and first home series will always be more popular no matter how badly the team did the previous season. The real indication will be attendances over the next few home series if the current on field performance carries on.
caulfield12
Last year from the middle of April through May 1st…the Sox hosted Cincy, the Royals, TB Rays and Minn 4-8 record in those games, including sweep of Tampa Bay 11,337 Reds 22,598 17,589 10,569 Royals 10,412 DH 10,323 TB Rays 28,009 12,669 10,772 Twins 11,609 12,216 158,103 / 11 gates=14,373 fans per game
Ducksnort
I was at Detroit's home opener. I'm telling you...that city is something special, and so is that Tigers team. It was, as the kids would say, LIT.

It's better now than any time in the last 30 years and has some legit fun neighborhoods. Still a far cry from what it was in its heyday but they've done a decent job with the hand they were dealt. palehose1
Since attendance is based on tickets sold (not attendance) I wonder what the season ticket base is? In the past years the bottom attendance (for a non -rescheduled game) was about 13-14K. I bet the number is about 9K-10K now. Even if the Sox play better I don't see a lot of additional sales when you almost always can get a better deal on the secondary market (SeatGeak, StubHub, etc.). I do think the promo schedule this year is one of the best they have had.

Pretty sure they have a 'night' for every ethnicity under the sun now. How will the hats look? I think the marketing (or whatever) department has adjusted pretty well to the terrible team. The campfire milkshake likely put more butts in seats than any player did. 'Star Wars, Bring Your Dog to a Picnic with Fireworks Night' stands to be a sellout. caulfield12
Our best chance to beat the Tigers is arguably Detroit auto manufacturing going backwards...ofc that's a long-term proposition and hopefully doesn't transpire.
caulfield12
NY @ Detroit 14,156 Minnesota @ KC 13,008 CHW @ CLE 33,722 (obviously terrible weather conditions, but that's kind of a warning sign for the Guardians to be be closer to 30K than 38,000)

As soon as the Dow is back anywhere close to 45200 let me know... The odds of a world recession are 40-50% higher, not to mention we've angered many of our closest allies unnecessarily, when it so obviously should have been the western world/democracies all attempting to isolate China as a unified bloc in the first place...instead of one country and person going it alone.

Worry implies panic...it's why Buffett sold all his Apple stock last year and is now sitting on a massive pile of cash waiting to be reinvested for the highest rate of return. And it's not a game for at least 80% of Americans. We'll see what those bottom 80% are feeling after/if the budget blueprint passes with tax cuts for rich and corporations. caulfield12
https://www.espn.com/mlb/attendance AL Central occupies #23-27 with only Pirates breaking that up. White Sox actually ahead of the Royals. That's almost astounding considering the playoff run they had last year. And ahead of the Twins as well. Pretty crazy considering 121. What has the weather been like for their home games, that could be a factor in K.C.'s attendance as well as who the opposition was.

WBWSF Posted yesterday at 02:25 AM Share Posted yesterday at 02:25 AM This team is so bad I'm beginning to think the crowds will even be small during the warmer months. The team simply isn't any good and most of all can't hit. I noticed that the White Sox have 10 bobblehead giveaways this year. Not one bobblehead is of any present player. Every bobblehead is of somebody from the past.
