Ozzietheairedale
I've been reading all the scattered posts and many of them are telling people to relax because we'll only be 3.5 games out with 2 months to go. Their thinking is that the Sox can easily make up these 3.5 games because the Twins schedule is more difficult and there's so many games left. 2 things, IMO, worry me though. 1. The trade deadline is in a few days. KW has got to make a decision whether to give up more minor league (or major league) talent for this year or save it for future years. If the Sox are 4-5 games out by then, I think he waits till next year. 2. The loss of Maggs and Frank basically mean that the current team CANNOT beat the Twins. And even if somehow they miraculously did win the division, they're going nowhere in the playoffs. So, I really think that the game tomorrow is critical to the rest of the season. If the Sox are 1.5 games out, KW goes for some trades and gives the Sox a chance. If they're 3.5 games out (or more by 7/31) he calls it quits. Our current lineup can beat the Twins - you choose to take a two-game sample size in which we are playing our worst baseball of the season. Talk to me in two weeks - and I'll still take our lineup over their lineup. Just so happens they're hot and we're not. It's all about the momentum - they got it, we don't. witesoxfan
No he will not quit he has invested to much just to call it quits. Agreed 100%. It's pretty much all or nothing. BTW...for the playoffs, I personally do not believe we need Maggs. We need Thomas, for sure, but Maggs is someone we can live without. mmmmmbeeer
I'm 100% confident that we can win the division with what we've got. I'm 100% positive that this team will go absolutely nowhere in the playoffs. I don't want to see KW burn down the farm to get help this season. We seriously don't have strong enough of a team, even if you added a Beltran. When we were planning on having both Frank and Maggs in the lineup we knew that there was a bullpen hole to be filled and possibly a LH bat or another starter would be needed. That was it. Guys, we just lost our 2 best hitters. There comes a time, from a business standpoint, that you don't make bad gambles. Going out and trading talent, spending money without filling nearly every hole is a bad gamble. I say we go with what we've got, maybe pick up a cheap BP arm. I still think we can win the division but it's not too difficult to see that we don't have a WS caliber team right now, we're about 4-5 players short. YASNY
This team is perfectly capable of winning it all. Our lineup is more balanced and less "slugger" oriented than it has been in years. Our bullpen as recently as a few days ago was 3rd best in either ERA or BAA in the AL (I'm not sure which it was). I like our rotation, as any of our starters can give us a chance to win on any given day. Our defense has been adequate. Sure, losing Maggs and Thomas hurts. But I see this as an opportunity for some other players to step up and put their stamp on this team. I can see a guy like Rowand or Everett or Lee .... preferably all three, start leading the charge. The Twins came in here and beat our 2 aces. Give them a ton of credit and regroup. Now is not the time for the team, or the fans for that matter, to roll over and play dead. Agreed 100 percent and we beat their two aces up in minny. What's weird is we've won both series in minny and they've won both series at the cell. First things first is we definitely need arow at the top of the order. Lee has become a great hitter, I don't care what his stats say he's 10 times the hitter he was last year, and there isn't a guy I'd rather have up in a clutch situation then carl, to me those 3 aren't the problem and I think most people would agree. Something that has been bugging me about pauly. While Pauly is obviously having a great year, he has to start shortening up his swing when the situation calls for it. Almost all of his hits lately have been solo homers and when someone is one base he's always grounding into dp's. With runners in scoring position he has to shorten up and just try to drive in the runners on base.
Ozzietheairedale
So you want another White Flag deal? HUH! um, where did I say that? rolleyeyes.gif All I said was that I think KW decides he has invested enough in this team if the Sox are 3.5 games out by the trade deadline or if they're around 1.5 games out he pulls the trigger on a significant deal for help. NUKE_CLEVELAND
If they're 3.5 games out (or more by 7/31) he calls it quits. As I recall they were a mere 3 games out in 1997 at this time when we gave up. I think they know better than to go that route again. It's taken every bit of 7 years to restore the fans goodwill and they cant afford to piss it away like that again.
