I think you’re really reaching here. We have 600+ DHs at-bats to give out and Gillaspie still needs to prove he’s a major league caliber talent. This is simply a depth/competition move IMO.
Agree teams like to duplicate skills sets in the minor leagues In case one of them doesn’t pan out. Cease and Kopech are an example of this. If both players work out they’ll find a spot or use them in a trade. If one falls apart they have someone else to possibly fill the role.
