  1. Milkman, This is why I dont waste time in this forum, where did I ever say that no experience would make Ventura good? I merely stated that before everyone freaks out about no experience, that there have been successful coaches with no experience. That doesnt mean that no experience = good, it just means that no experience does not have to equal bad. I dont know if you seriously cant understand the difference, or if you feel that if you play dumb Ill somehow trip up and make an absurd statement. Ill hope for the latter.
  2. No I stated what I meant. That there have been successful managers who have had 0 coaching experience. I never said it was common or uncommon. And yes it happens, because I pointed to examples of it happening.
  3. Where did I use the word uncommon. You find that in one of my posts, Ill do the research for you or Ill quit posting in this forum, your choice. I stated that there have been coaches who had no managerial experience, and I provided examples. Misquoting me wont get you anywhere.
  4. Milkman, You dont pay me enough to do your research for you.
  5. Im pretty sure Ventura accepting a job that he doesnt need shows he wants to be a manager. He could have easily said no and over time hes consistently said he wanted to be involved with baseball again after his kids grew up. Maybe he just didnt want his kids to turn out to be like Oney?
  6. Wow really Joey Cora? Because he learned from Ozzie? This is definitely bizzarro world.
  7. Dont worry Slav, its just the regular here, much ado about nothing. Anyone with google can find names of managers who had no experience (Joe Torrie) and managers with tons of experience that arent good (Jerry Manuel). I also find it amusing that people are just assuming Ventura was cheaper than Martinez, when there is nothing to suggest thats true. Ventura made far more money in his career than Martinez, Ventura has turned down basically every coaching job offered to hm besides this one. If anything it probably cost more to get Ventura than Martinez. But hey lets just make things up and get angry because we are upset! ROAR
  8. Why does everyone think Ventura is going to be a yes man? To the best of my knowledge the guy has refused every coaching job hes been offered, wouldtn that suggest hed only take the job if he was allowed to do what he wants?
  9. Chisox, I agree that a managers attitude can negatively impact a team. I just dont believe Ventura has that type of attitude. Hes far more even keeled than Ozzie.
  10. Its impossible to know what Martinez would have wanted as Im not sure the Sox even spoke with him. And no one knows if Ventura was cheap or not, previously hes turned down all coaching offers, so youd have to imagine that they offered at least a decent salary to get him to change his mind.
  11. Milkman, Honestly I dont know. I dont keep a running tally of who did what in their previous coaching careers. Dave Martinez, Sandy Alomar and Robin Ventura, never managed a MLB team. If you want to say that being a bench coach, 3b coach, whatever is equivalent experience to managing, that is your call. All I know is that (imo) Ventura is going to be a revelation compared to Ozzie. And win lose or draw, its going to be the players, not the manager who ultimately decide the success of a team. This is not the NBA/NFL where a Head Coach can significantly change the dynamic of a team.
  12. Yeah because working the cash register at McDonalds is the same as being the CEO. HE HAD EXPERIENCE AT MCDONALDS!!! Oh and Joe Torre never had coaching experience. But lets all pretend that no one has ever been a manager without previous experience before.
  13. Steve, Maybe its because some of the most famous baseball managers were "player managers." I think its interesting (insert stupid) that people dont want to research the fact that there is almost 0 correlation between MLB managerial experience and success at the major league level. I think its interesting (insert stupid) that people dont believe Robin can be a good manager just because he hasnt been a coach. Whatever the facts, I really cant imagine anyone creating a good argument that MLB manager is harder than NBA/NFL. And thats the comparison.
  14. Id find the Thomas part really shocking, I dont really see him fitting with the Robin mold.
  15. Milkman, I meant to say he never "MANAGED". Thats why I did not originally list him with the other names (Connie Mack, Joe Torre etc.)
  16. Um Steve Stone versus Robin? Robin for $1000 Alex? KHP, When baseball managers start calling offensive and defensive plays, is the day I start to worry about a managers experience. For Ventura's entire baseball career he has been doing the same things a manager does, advanced scouting, looking at match ups, etc. I just dont see why people are freaking out.
  17. Milkman, How do I know hes legit? Id say its because Ive read and watched a few things about Robin Ventura in my day. (edit) Really, because I havent met/watched/seen Ozzie versus Robin? A lot of you guys are going to look silly for yelling about Robin without even letting him manage a game.
  18. Dasox, Yes Girardi never coached before he became manager of the Marlins. So he sucked. Because you know, playing baseball for 10+ years and being in clubhouses, isnt experience.
  19. Id say if anything, Robin was told that they would not rebuild. (Im just guessing, but prior to this year Robin has consistently turned down coaching opportunities, so I just cant imagine hed decide to take on a team that was going to suck.)
  20. Well Robin as a player was the antithesis of Ozzie, so unless he drastically changes who he is, you have to expect he will coach the same way as he plays. In fact, how do you know how Dave Martinez would coach, hes never managed before. Of all sports, baseball is the one where the manager needs the least amount of experience. Its such a simple sport to manage.
  21. Just so you know, Joe Torre was a manager with 0 experience (he actually was player manager, than manager, never coached at a lower level). Some guy named Connie Mack never was anything less than a manager.
  22. Steve, NBA and MLB are apples and oranges. Im pretty sure that Robin can read stat sheets and make better decisions than Ozzie. Im pretty sure that in a year or 2 people are going to wonder why they ever questioned Robin. The guy is legit, he just never wanted to be a coach before, otherwise hed have a ton of useless experience.
  23. Bmags, Im not sure if it was the Yankees, but Robin has been a pretty hot name for coaching, he just has always said that he didnt want to coach (at this time). I cant believe the Sox actually were able to convince him to do it.
  24. Man I really cant believe that people are negative on this move. Most people have assumed that Robin would be a hot coaching option as soon as he decided that he wanted to coach. The fact that the Sox were actually able to convince him to coach is pretty impressive. Im not sure what experience has to do with coaching baseball. This isnt football where you call plays, its baseball and Im pretty sure that I could program a computer to make better decisions than Ozzie. "IF A stats against LHP > B stats against LHP replace B with A." Robin is exactly the opposite of Ozzie, which is exactly what this team needs. This is one of the few hires that Id actually be interested in. It really isnt difficult to be a baseball manager, and its almost impossible to be worse than Ozzie "I make the line ups" Guillen.
