  1. Andy Dirks coming off the injured list is a huge addition to the Tigers. He was uncharacteristically hitting the ball like a batting champion before he injured his achilles and he hasn't missed a beat since his return. The additions of Dirks and Infante go a long way towards plugging the few holes they had in that lineup.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 19, 2009 -> 03:38 PM)
    WIth the status of their payroll and finances I'll bet the last thing they want is to be in that race. They are going to lose so much money up there, they have got to want to shed payroll, but they can't do it while in first place.

    Is Illitch really losing that much money? Aren't they still top 5 in attendance in the AL? IIRC Illitch recently gave the Tiger's GM a call to do "whatever it takes" to make the Tigers a winner this season. Now he's obviously not going to go all George Steinbrenner on anyone but Illitch has deeper pocketbooks and a more intense desire to win a title than most realize.

    If Detroit benches Magglio enough so he doesn't reach his extension clauses, it's not because of the money (well not entirely) but more so because he's become an awful power hitter and the Tigers are probably better off with a different player in rightfield, this season and beyond.

  3. The Tigers take the rubber match 8-3 against the Royals and in so doing...

    Rick Porcello became the first Major League pitcher since Dwight Gooden to win five consecutive starts at age 20 or younger, and he fell a run shy of doing it with five straight starts of one run or none for the first time since Fernando Valenzuela in 1981.
  4. QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ May 23, 2009 -> 05:45 PM)
    well, i don't think a guy who was in single A last year is going to be able to stay strong for the duration of the season. Same goes for Perry, he's going to hit some bumps. Gallaraga is coming down to earth but Jackson and Verlander look very stout. That will keep them in the running. I also doubt Miggy is going to hit .380 this season, so he's due for an adjustment. But I've always liked Inge and to think they almost gave up on him. Oh...and zoom will get hurt again this season.

    And Gallaraga, Polanco, Guillen, and Ordonez are all going to stay sh**** all season?

  5. Regarding the Tigers hottest pitcher coming into this series. Most would say that it's Armando Galarraga after looking at his numbers as well as his 6 innings of perfect baseball in his last start...but Verlander has been the Tigers best pitcher for about the last two months.

    In July...

    Galarraga=> 1-2, 2.84 ERA, .222 BAA

    Verlander=> 4-0, 2.20 ERA, .168 BAA

  6. Which makes it all the more impressive that the Tigers just locked up Granderson for 5 more years at $30.25 million.

    He gets $1 million this year, $3.5 million in 2009, $5.5 million in 2010, $8.25 million in 2011 and $10 million in 2012.

    The Tigers have a $13 million option for 2013 with a $2 million buyout.

    That contract's a bargain for a player of Granderson's caliber.

  7. CF - Grady Sizemore vs Curtis Granderson

    Advantage - PUSH

    SS - Jhonny Peralta vs Edgar Renteria

    Advantage - TIGERS

    DH - Travis Hafner vs Gary Sheffield

    Advantage - PUSH

    C - Victor Martinez vs Ivan Rodriguez

    Advantage - INDIANS

    1B - Ryan Garko vs Carlos Guillen

    Advantage - PUSH

    3B - Casey Blake vs Miguel Cabrera

    Advantage - TIGERS

    LF - Jason Michaels vs Jacque Jones

    Advantage - TIGERS

    RF - Franklin Gutierrez vs Magglio Ordonez

    Advantage - TIGERS

    2B - Asdrubal Cabrera vs Placido Polanco

    Advantage - TIGERS

  8. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 01:22 PM)
    This was my projection. I think Jacque will split time with Thames. Considering they have plenty of power, would YOU start Jones?

    It's sounding like Thames might not even be offered arbitration by the Tigers. Jones is their starting left-fielder as of today.

    That Detroit lineup (regardless of whether Thames or Jones or my grandmother Ethel start)...is going to be filthy and will score ridiculous amounts of runs. Noticably more dangerous from top to bottom than the Indians IMHO.

  9. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 09:08 PM)
    As I said, I respect the Tigers for going for it all right now, but they are in trouble down the line, now more than ever. They have a very old core, and with the Flordia deal, they just traded basically all their replacements.

    Even if they sign Cabrera long term, they still are in trouble down the road. However if the can win the series in the next two years, it will be worth it.

    With a potential quartet of pitchers the caliber of Verlander, Bonderman, Willis and Porcello...I think the Tigers will be alright three or four years down the road. And with an owner seemingly willing to increase his payroll as high as anyone not named the Yankees or Red Sox, I think Detroit will be in fine position in the market to restock their DH, C, 1B and RF positions in a few years. With one of the best GM's in the game in Dave Dombrowski running the show...if I were a Tiger fan, (which I am) I'd be pretty confident that Detroit will be able to remain competitive for the foreseeable future.

    PS. I guess this means I need a new avatar now. lol. Oh well, to get Miggy...it was worth it.

  10. QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Sep 6, 2007 -> 03:48 PM)
    I like Polanco and the Sox were looking for a secondbaseman at the time he was moved. Did the Tigers have to give anything up for him?

    The Tigers acquired Polanco from the Philadelphia Phillies in 2005, for relief pitcher Ugueth "The Murderer" Urbina. The Phillies were looking to unload Polanco because they had Chase Utley ready and waiting for full time duty.

    "They needed relief pitchers, and we needed a second baseman, so the trade happened pretty quickly," GM David Dombrowski said.

  11. QUOTE(Whitewashed in '05 @ Jul 2, 2007 -> 03:55 PM)
    You'd think with his speed he could steal 50+ bags a season.

    I don't know about 50 but he should have btwn 30 and 40.

    Leyland has an opinion on that...

    "I think Curtis Granderson is the most conscientious young man that I've ever been around in baseball," Leyand said. "That's how I feel about him as a person. That translates into his personality as a baseball player in the sense that he always wants to do everything right, almost to a fault, because he doesn't want to make any mistakes. So, because he doesn't want to make any mistakes, sometimes he doesn't let himself fly enough [on the bases]. Not passive, but too cautious."

  12. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 17, 2007 -> 01:02 PM)
    The Tigers have reportedly decided to designate Craig Monroe for assignment to make room for Cameron Maybin

    That they're jettisoning Monroe suggests the Tigers believe Maybin will play a significant role through the end of the season.

    I knew my avatar would make sense sooner rather than later. :)

    If you had asked me a week ago, "Who will make it to the Majors first, Cameron Maybin or Jay Bruce?"

    Never in a million years would I have said Maybin.

  13. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Aug 15, 2007 -> 05:45 PM)
    I'll be watching intently.

    Nothing the White Sox need more than yet another talented pitching prospect to emerge out of Detroit.

    I don't know about you but I thought that Jurrjens looked pretty dang good. His poise and the location and speed of his fastball were all impressive...and he's only 21 years old. I guess he's going to be starting another start with Detroit (next week (again) against Cleveland) as Miller struggled some in his first rehab start with Toledo.

  14. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 06:14 PM)
    Hmm... I'm interested in yours and Jack's opinions here -- are you sort of miffed that Ledezma was relegated to the bullpen while guys like Maroth and Durbin got shots over him? I've always liked what I've seen from Ledezma, although maybe I just catch him on his 'right' days.

    I'd like to see how he does in a set role as a starter.

    Fredo has definitely pitched well for the Tigers in the past...with "the past" being as recently as last season. You loved him and his potential because that live south-pawed 94-96 mph fastball (when it was on) was a precious commodity to have. When he was locating, he looked like the second coming of Steve Avery in his prime. Overall, he had a great 2006 season for Detroit.

    But you wonder if that all was a fluke because he has been consistently inconsistent this year and has been making some horrible decisions out there on the mound. For whatever reason, he absolutely cannot get left-handers out (they're batting like .340 off of him). I definitely agree though that he's probably a better starting pitching prospect than as a reliever (he struggles out of the stretch at times) but I really question if he has the mental makeup to succeed as an every(5th)day starter.

    Sure it would've been nice if Detroit had the options left to send him down to Toldeo to work on a few things, cuz he definitely needs some work...but the options were all used up and Dombrowski had no other option but to trade him. In the end I think DD got decent value for him...especially since Detroit was never going to use him as a starter.

    Now only if he can unload Maroth for a strong throwing, dependable, long-inning righty to replace Jason Grilli and trade Todd Jones for a used bar of soap. :)

  15. The Tigers are straight up mashing the ball this month. A few stats for illustrative purposes...

    Magglio is hitting .483 in June.

    The Tigers have SEVEN players hitting over .330 in June.

    The Tigers AS A TEAM is hitting .333 in June.

    Wow.
