  1. QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Jun 20, 2012 -> 09:08 PM)
Maybe if we built something from within that had a chance to be sustainable, people would be more excited/optimistic. That's what happened in the 90s.

And how was an important portion of that built? By averaging 72 wins from '86-89. Those records also turned into McDowell, Ventura, Thomas, & Fernandez.

  2. While the White Sox have tried to address the worst system in baseball with some offseason trades, they do have some hope coming from their most recent draft, including Soptic, a third-round pick who reportedly touched 100 mph during a game last spring at Johnson County CC in Overland Park, Kan.

Triple-digit fastballs usually mean seven-figure bonuses, but Soptic is far from a finished product, as his slider needs work, even for him to become a successful reliever. Still, much like how you can't teach height in the NBA, you can't teach velocity, and Soptic has that building block covered.

  3. Tribe scratched Alex White & Drew Pomeranz from their starts.

Now, MLBTR is reporting the deal is done, & Ubaldo's going to Cleveland for White, Pomeranz & another player (may or may not be Kipnis) .

    Quite a haul for Colorado.

  4. Edwin Rodriguez resigns

    ESPN.com news services

Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez has resigned with the team mired in a nine-game losing streak.

    Rodriguez

Marlins bench coach Brandon Hyde will replace Rodriguez for Sunday's game against the Rays, the team said in a news release.

The Marlins were 1-17 in June entering the game at Tampa Bay and sat last in the NL East at 32-39, 12½ games behind the Phillies.

Rodriguez became the first Puerto Rican manager in the major leagues when the Marlins made him interim manager last June, and the team went 46-46 the rest of the year. He then spent a month after the regular season in limbo before being named to the permanent job.

The Marlins said then they had discussed several managerial candidates but they conducted no formal interviews.

Rodriguez received only a one-year contract, but said at the time he figured he still got a good deal.

"I'm very confident that our team, even though it's a very young team, we're going to be winning a lot of games," he said.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

BTW, when was the last time a hitting/pitching coach or manager was fired by the Sox mid-season? Since I've been a fan, I can't remember.

Gary Ward in 2003. Replaced by Walker.

  6. Edwin Jackson in line to start 2nd game

    Found this part interesting:

The Sox have set up their rotation for the first five exhibition games. Gavin Floyd, the likely No. 4 starter, will pitch the Sox's exhibition opening on Feb. 28 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Opening day starter Mark Buehrle will face Milwaukee on March 1, followed by Jackson on March 2 against Cincinnati at Goodyear and left-hander John Danks on March 3 against Seattle.

I know it may not be definite, but I thought Danks might actually get the nod this year. But Buehrle getting it works too.

  7. Nice win for the Dash.

Jose Martinez 3/4 and goes yard.

Jon Gilmore 3/5 with 2 doubles.

Santos Rodriguez with 26 K's in his last 10 appearances, though the walks are starting to creep up too.

  8. Brian Anderson threw a scoreless inning Sunday in his minor league pitching debut for the Arizona League Royals.

The AZL is a pretty low level of competition, but Anderson did well enough. He allowed only one hit, struck out two, and will continue to work toward becoming a reliable middle reliever. Anderson, 28, made the decision to move from the outfield to the pitching rubber at the end of spring training.

  9. Jon Gilmore won the Carolina/California League HR Derby:

    Gilmore rules the Carolina/Cal Derby

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Winston-Salem third baseman Jon Gilmore won the Home Run Derby before the 15th annual Carolina/California League All-Star Game on Tuesday night, benefiting from a fortuitous shift in the winds at BB&T Coastal Field to defeat High Desert's Rich Poythress.

With winds blowing in from center field for most of the competition, hitters had trouble getting balls through the gusts to center and right. Shortly before Gilmore hit in the finals, the breeze began blowing from right field toward home plate, helping the right-handed hitter who had only three homers in 301 at-bats for the Dash in the first half.

"I went up against a lot of great guys. Fortunately, the wind started blowing in from the right, so I had a pretty good chance from the right side of the plate, trying to hit it out to left," Gilmore said.

Poythress, a first baseman who hit 14 homers and drove in a California League-high 65 runs in the first half, swung first in the finals. Poythress hit three longballs, twice clearing the left-field stands, before making the requisite five outs.

Gilmore stepped in and hit two home runs before sending a long fly to the top of the wall in left field that was ruled to have stayed in the ballpark instead of tying the contest. He then sent a ball deep into the stands in left to knot Poythress at three apiece and won the competition with a moon shot that cleared the seating area.

"We didn't really get any warmup swings before or anything," said Gilmore, chosen as a Carolina League reserve. "I was starting to lock in at the end there. It was fun."

Advancing after the first round were San Jose's Juan Perez (five) and Poythress (three) for the California League, and Frederick's Ronnie Welty (five) and Gilmore (three) for the Carolina League. Gilmore beat Winston-Salem's Justin Greene, 2-0, in a playoff round.

Poythress, the California League's starting designated hitter Tuesday night, hit four homers in the semifinals to Perez's three. Gilmore reached the finals by besting Welty, 2-1.
