[Trade Quintana and Eaton to the Cubs???]

Was listening the ESPN1000 Fred Huebner's show today. His partner - whose name I did not catch - is an avowed Cub fan. the conversation was about the Sox, and what they should be doing to improve their team. At one point Huebner's partner offered up the idea that the Sox "would jump" at a Cub offer of Baez and Soler for Quintana and Eaton; though he then said the Cubs "would never consider" such a deal.

 

I almost drove off of the road. In my mind, that thinking epitomizes many Cub fans. They are beginning to believe the hype. There is no way, at least IMO, that the Sox would be interested in that sort of deal. It certainly undersells Quintana's value, and almost disregards Eaton.

 

Just thought I would share.

The SOX would have to throw in LaRoche and Danks to make it fair.

Like you I'm a huge fan of Nolan Arenado. But if I'm the Rockies the Sox will need to include Sale in any trade talks for Arenado. They probably still wouldn't trade him. Like Sale there are only a few players that young and elite at their position.

I can't imagine a scenario in which the Sox *don't* bring Mark back this winter, unless he completely reverses course and either signs an extension with Toronto or goes somewhere else (like St. Louis). He's already made it clear he's not retiring after 2015. Buehrle is still incredibly durable and consistent even at his age and would be a great mentor for our young pitching staff.

Buehrle has a much better chance increasing his win total pitching for Toronto or St.Louis. Three more good years will get Mark close to 260 wins and a possible HOF induction.

I like Abreu in the second spot. Now just put Avi in the DH spot and Thompson or Shuck in right and that's about as good as you get with the current roster.

I have supported much of Robin's moves since June. Moving Melky to 4 once he was en fuego...though maybe not this forcing Saladino at 2.

I'm pretty harsh on prospect packages, but even I would say that four-pack would be the definition of quality and quantity. It's the only thing (minus a Kris Bryant-plus package) that would get me on board with trading Sale. You'd be filling a heck of a lot of holes. However I agree there's no way the Dodgers make that deal.

They probably wouldn't but a Kershaw, Greinke, Sale trio in any playoff series would be awfully tough for anyone to beat.

I expect the SOX to stand pat until July 27th. By that time the KC,STL, and Clev series should make it pretty clear whether they have a shot this year or not. They will plan for both buying or selling during the next couple weeks.

Molina(32) Carpenter(29)and Wong (24) would be my response. That's the kind of impact trade I'd be looking for. Though Molina has a lot of mileage on those knees.

Avi is a DH without the certainty of 30 or even 25 homers and a marginal OBP.

 

What team would give you a young infielder with above average offensive and defensive upside for that? LaRoche at his age is more salary dump than the expectation of a return better than Nolan Sanburn.

 

You can probably get a Susac or Swihart/Vasquez...at catcher, but then you blow yet another hole in your offense where you don't have a minor league replacement.

 

It's like filling one leak in the dike with a sandbag...two more will holes will spring up.

If the SOX are not willing to trade Sale or Quintana, Abreu is the only position player in our entire system that would return a proven starter and top prospect. It would be interesting to see what the SOX could get for Avi. Since this team has 5 major holes (C,1B,2B,SS,DH) out of 8 moving Abreu or Avi still leaves 4-5 holes just at different positions.

Keep this team together and with a top 3 pick each of Sale's next four years draft a SS,2B,3B, and C. Looking back over the last 4 years that might be players like:

I like how you are thinking about this and would be ecstatic if the SOX made that deal. But if I was making decisions for Colorado I'd want Sale or Rodon for the 24 year old budding superstar Arenado. Rodon for Arenado ....mmmmmmmmmmmmm????? maybe.

I'm basically 100% confident that I would not have traded Quintana for the package the A's got for Donaldson last year. I'm pretty confident I wouldn't have traded Quintana for Donaldson last offseason either, although I'm a bit more iffy on that (people kept whispering about Donaldson's medicals as a reason why the A's moved an MVP candidate for less than he's worth so I'd have to wonder a bit on that). In other words, Donaldson would have been the main piece in a package acquiring Quintana, not the other way round.

 

Quintana's been more disappointing this year so I'd be a little more open, but still hesitant on even those, given the contract status of the players.

 

Sale and Abreu are the only two players I wouldn't trade for Donaldson. Then or now. That is without any knowledge of health issues with Donaldson.

Ironic thing is there would have been a national outcry last night if Posey was ruled as blocking the plate. Aspects of instant replay have really hurt the game watching experience this year.

Replays and this blocking the plate rule are ruining the game I grew up with.
