Because there's been so much confusion on this, I thought I'd post what today's Tribune has to say.

 

The Sox won't even be compensated with a 1st round draft pick for losing Gordon or Colon. Because Anaheim's record left the Angels with a pick in the first half of the first round, they have to surrender only a 2nd round selection if they sign Colon. The Sox would also receive a sandwich pick between the 1st and 2nd rounds.

The Sox will get another sandwich pick after losing Gordon, plus the Yankees' 2nd or 3rd round selection. Gordon is ranked below other free agent signees Gary Sheffield and Paul Quantrill.

Let me be the first to say that not getting a first rounder from the Yankees or Angels will be a good thing for the Sox. Let's look a little bit beyond the obvious and think about reality.

 

Currently, assuming the Sox don't sign a free agent that would cause them to lose their first roung pick (which would not be the end of the world), they will have the following:

 

1. Their own 1st round pick

2. Two supplemental picks between the 1st and 2nd rounds

3. Three second round picks.

 

That totals six picks. If the Sox had three first rounders and two supplemental picks, there is no way in hell they would have the budget to sign all of them. In this case, they will have the opportunity to look for and draft more players like Jeremy Reed and Ryan Sweeney and have a better opportunity of signing all of them. They can focus on finding good baseball players that have talent, rather than just drafting "high ceiling athletes".

 

In the real world of budgets there is no way the Sox would spend $7 or $8 million dollars on their first 5 or 6 draft picks. Might they budget $4 or $5 million? I think that is much more likely.

I always thought that the Bobby Seay situation was orchestrated by the Sox, that they weren't going to sign him and so let the period to offer a contract expire. I believe no organization could be so stupid that this could have happened by accident/oversight. So spreading out these picks is probably a good thing.

its good to have it spread out because of the money, now that we have so many(top 100) picks, with the first 2 picks the best players available...then we can fill weak postions in our system with good talent ( catching, more pitching, speed, shortstop)....this up coming draft (and last years) could make our minor league system have more depth and produce good prospects

 

 

BTW....sheffield wasnt offered arbitration, so the braves dont get any draft picks for him

Isnt Frank the only Sox 1st round pick on the team? The Sox usually trade it away (see:ring,wells), or don't pan out well (borchard,m.johnson)...I take the Sox 1st round picks with a grain of salt from now on...Look in the middle rounds of the draft...Although we do have Jeremy Reed from the 2nd Round....

The Sox should actually trust somewhat into their farm system instead of pissing it away as they have been the past few years...

i'm hoping we fill 4 weaknesses....we need more starting pitchers (can never have to man of them), catchers ( we have no prospects in the minors), speed (we need more speed in the minors), and shortstop ( competition for Valido)

The same scenerio happend to a few other teams that year if I recall corectly and I also seem to recall reading that it happend alot before then but the agents didn't try to take advantage of it.
