If you want to try something adventurous first, unwind the coils on your old pickups, then rewind and redip them in wax and see how that works. That's what Jimi used to do, y'know.

From the description, that 'S' pickup sounds like their old PAF pickup from the mid-80s - basically the last time I was ambitious enough to upgrade much on my electric guitars. Had a lot more time on my hands (and disposable income too, I guess) back in high school...
